The next one to approach was the mother of the twins. She had slightly darker hair, but the same eyes as her children. She was a lovely woman, looked in her late twenties but he imagined she was probably closer to her late thirties. “Evening,” she cooed with a polite, gentle tone. Motherly, Stein surmised. It fit.
After swallowing the bite he managed to scarf down, he offered a hand in greeting. “Nice to meet you. Name’s Stein. I’d say I just moved in, but apparently everyone is pretty aware of that.”
“Malissa.” She accepted his handshake. Her grasp was gentle and soft, like a true lady. “Mother of the twins,”
“Figured. Storm informed me you were next in line.” Stein said with a chuckle. “Cute kids though. Probably more my speed with the videogames and youtube addictions. I may look like an adult, but I only act like it to pay the bills – most of which to entertain my inner child.”
Malissa responded with a light laugh. “I could never get into all that techno mumbo jumbo… I was born in Camelot, so it just goes right over my head.” Stein nodded. From his understanding, technology there as very limited. “I moved here with my ex-husband before the kids were born. He thought we would all be happier here. Sadly, he was a little too happy.”
That sounded rough. “I gotcha.”
“I feel bad they don’t get to see much of their father. What about you? Did you grow up with both parents?” This question again…
“Yea, but I had two dads. I was surrogate-born, and my biological mother kept in touch, so you could say I had three parents growing up, my mom just wasn’t as big a role.” Malissa’s brow arched. Wait for it…
“So,” here it comes… “Are you ….” She leads off, but Stein knew what she was suggesting.
He shook his head and forked another small bite of fish. “Nah. I’m straight. That whole ‘gay couples make gay babies’ is a myth.” The fish is popped into his maw for a few moments of savoring. Malissa seemed unsure how to really continue the conversation. She nodded while peering around. He could almost hear the gears spinning. “Doctor and an Investigator… Both really good men, liked helping anyone they could.” He left out the heavy impact they had on his early Heroing career. Maybe he would make the knowledge well known later on.
“I see. I’ll have to talk to you more about this, I can’t help to find it fascinating… Alas, so many other people want to meet you.” The woman offered a bright smile. She was a beautiful woman with a kind soul. No doubt she’d find a father for her children sooner or later. She rose, wished him farewell, then made her way over to the grill with Z’tar. He definitely noticed that little sashay of her hips as she walked away. Is everyone going to flirt with me?
By now, Stein was beginning to expect this… the flow of people trying to meet him. The next to join him at his table was a woman he guessed to be a few years younger than him. She was definitely a beauty. Ebony skin like milk chocolate, deep brown eyes, an infectious smile and a light pink gloss to her lips. She definitely turned some heads when she walked. Though not entirely flat, she had more of a lean figure. Cute, but not bombacious in figure, he’d say. “Hey Turtle.”
“Wait what?” The hero’s eyes widened and his brows dropped. The young woman retrieved her phone from her pocket and unlocked the screen. She showed him his own tweet, one of the #Herotime posts. “Oh… uh… You a fan?”
She smiled, knowing damn well she caught the up-and-coming celebrity off guard. “Well you’re not going to find me on the wrong side of one of those shields.” Her free hand rose, pretending to deflect make believe bullets out of the air. “Dianne Taylor. It’s pretty awesome to see a Prime live among us mere mortals.”
Her appreciation of his modesty was something he’d heard before. With a shrug, the hero said, “I’ve never been one for big flashy estates. It gets lonely at the top…”
Her brow rose. She looked good with an inquisitive expression. In fact, it seems her complexion was perfect for curiosity. “Oh? So Mr. Invincible desires companionship? Cute. Well you have your pick here. Not a lot of young guys tend to stay at the Duplex, and I won’t pretend I didn’t see you eyeing some milf meat…”
“Hey…” He held up a hand, a gesture to cool her jets. “To be absolutely fair… I’m a guy… it’s been a while… and there are a lot of pretty women here.”
Dianne finally pulled a chair from the table, propping an arm on the hard plastic surface as she sat. “I take it that’s why you stayed?”
Stein’s jaw shifted in thought. “It was one of the perks.”
“The others?”
“I was well informed there was a chef, weekly cookouts, a pool, and a billiard table, free gym and a free laundry mat for renters, and a breakfast bar…” He acted cool, as if all this didn’t have him leaping at the opportunity.
“I see you’re properly dressed for the pool too. Planning on going for a dip?”
Stein’s initial response was a laugh. “Duh.”
“Well, I think I’ve taken up enough of your time.” Wait, what? “If you want to hang out more, you should join us after ten for a swim. The pool’s heated, and all the children and elderly are asleep around that time.” Wait, WHAT? He did not have the chance to respond before she stood and departed. She too had a little sashay. This whole place is running on pheromones and libido!
Note to self… Check out the pool after hours…
