Not Vincent, but seriously this bugged me.

I've always wondered to, buut a very plausible theory is that Aerith is still alive at that scene, just knocked out. If they had tried Pheonix downing her it would fail cause she's merely unconcious.

Another theory of mine is perhaps the way "Death" works in FF. Perhaps when you "Die" in battle, you're merely knocked out? That could explain why base pheonix downs bring them back with little health. A sort of Smelling Salts if you will.
