Samus opened her eyes. White. What the hell?
She sat up. More white. Was she still dreaming? She looked down at her hand. She was in her suit. If this was a dream, it was a very convincing one. She could hear water, close by. She turned and looked at the fountain behind her. Enormous, metallic and circular. It was spewing water in a great arc. As she looked up at it, a fine mist fell upon her visor.
She got to her feet. What the thing had said – that this was another world – had to be impossible. This was somebody’s trick, somebody had trapped her. Was this virtual reality? Was she strapped to a chair somewhere? It wouldn’t have surprised her to be woken up by the Galactic Federation, arrested after she’d sent the space station crashing into planet SR388, destroying both. But this was too weird. The Federation wouldn’t do something like this. The space pirates perhaps. Or some unknown foe.
