As I raged through the heart of the skyscraper, two concerns had cropped up. One was that this supposed simple mission had turned to all out war against the forces that had chosen to defend the tower. These misfits turned out to be powerful people, enough so that every glance down at the bottom of my HUD told me that my ammo and health slowly depleted with each failed attempt to wiped them out and and each attack they landed. The second was that if I ever ran into another skeleton or zombie in my lifetime, then it would be too fucking soon! The skeletal security guard that I had dismissed at the start now harassed me with every inch I fought closer to the roof. Bone like spears followed me everywhere, the boney fighter either shot straight at me or carved their way across the wall as the other combatants took turns to drag me back into melee. The last combatant in particular, the zombie creature that called itself Grundy, had made rags of my armor and almost killed me twice before were it not for poor attention on his part.
I felt my blood boil as the battle slogged on, either side not willing to stop as destruction and blood trailed through the hallways, spent bullet casings and bloomed shotgun shells decorated the carpet wherever I went. Each time I outmaneuvered the security guards I still searched for a ways up, but I couldn't get very far with the gnarly wound across my leg the big armored dolt gave me and I would be under their cross hairs again. My only chance was a sign reading "stairs" at the end of the hallway I had bitterly dug into, and a slow retreat backwards sounded grim but it was my best shot.
I looked at the ammo counter in the bottom right of my helmet. I had enough. The barrels of my chaingun whirled like the machinery of death and I filled up the hallway with lead and fire.
"Come at me, you fucks!" I yelled along with my weapon as I stepped back. "Don't you have any spines?! I'd ask if you had any balls, but I know none of you do!" The walls exploded with plaster and paper as bullets slammed into them, a cloud of drywall hung where the scrimmage line laid. A few bullets wizzed past my own head through it, and I could see a slight blur of red as the scythe-wielding sniper thought she was safe from the back. I stopped the inaccurate fire and brought the sights of my weapon up. I let loose a burst of fire, and heard a feminine scream as a mist of red splattered across the wall behind her and she crumpled into the door frame she used as cover.
"One down!" I yelled as I let the chaingun hang and pulled out my shotgun, a few new shells slotted into the ammo feed as I expected the counter attack "Which is one is fucking next?!" The sound of thunder announced that one of the bigger guards had taken the challenge, and the heavily armored soldier charged forwards while thunder boy used him as a meat shield.
"Stand and take it like a man!" Tinman yelled, the high powered weapon he clutched just as loud as a few more explosive rounds were fired my way. We traded rounds, each pull of the trigger sent shocked down the nerves of the scorched skin my arm, until I felt one of the explosive rounds embedded into the chest of my armor. In that brief moment I felt dread rip down my spine before the impact turned into a fireball that rippled through the rest of my body.
Armor shards fragmented and splintered away from the explosion, along with chunks of flesh and specks of blood that bloomed around the initial hit. I reeled back from the blow, a cry of pain escaped my mouth. My armor had saved me from insides being turned to slurry, but I now had a crater in my torso and I had one hand pressed on it keep it as sealed as I could. I had only one shot, at tinman knew it as he charged in with an axe in one hand and a grenade pulled from his belt and tossed right at me.
I just smiled as I raised the shotgun at the explosive, pulled the tirgger with one hand, and buckshot collided with the grenade where it tumbled in the air and landed at the other marine's feet instead.
"Oh frak" was the only thing I could hear from the bloodied soldier before he grabbed his smaller companion. He threw the lighting user all the way back, t the cluster bomb blew the walls to bits and the floor was reduced to large gaps with weakened struts to bridge the two sides. Which the power armored soldier had carefully balanced himself on top of, only slightly worse for wear. I think for a moment he thought he had lucked out, until he looked up to see I switched the shotgun for my rocket launcher and heard the WHUNMPH as I sent the propelled explosive right at him. I didn't get to see what happened, as I immediately turned and rushed for the stairs, only the sound of metal and explosive and the lick of the pressure wave at my heels told that I hit something.
I hobbled as fast as I could over to other end, only for my heart to sink as I made it; there was a door. My boot repeated slammed into the lock, which slowly gave way with each strike. Not fast enough for my liking, as I heard the the pounding of feet behind me again, and when I gave a quick look back to the other I saw the enormous body of the zombie man jump over the pit in a single bound. His stupid cardboard armor and the stolen hammer in his hand was then a sight of terror.
"GREEN MAN, YOU HURT LITTLE GIRL! GRUNDY WILL-" I didn't even give him the chance to say anything as I ripped a smoke grenade from it's spot, pulled the pin, and let it drop to my feet. Everything was immediately blocked out by a thick fog, and I took the chance to sidestep into the stairwell "GREEN MAN CAN'T HIDE FROM GRUNDY!" He yelled louder, which was amazing considering he already had no volume control. All for nothing, as I watched his silhouette charge through where I was a second ago and into the wall I had stood in front of. The only thing running with the zombie was his legs.
"Grundy needs to shut up" I quipped as I reached down to my belt again and pulled open a medkit, I pulled apart the back of a medi-patch and slapped onto the hole in my body. It stung like a hot iron, but the pain suppressors started their work and the bleeding was successfully staunched. I'd deal with the shrapnel when I wasn't under fire.
But I wasn't dead yet. I ascended the stairs, super shotgun and hand, and images of reducing the tower to rubble in my head.
