Diversity
#11
I agree that people should not include diversity for diversity's sake, but I do not agree that avoiding diverdity die to insecurity on properly representing the groups in question is a valid reason to make a given cast of characters the same race as you are.

I am a white male and with Millie I write as a black female. Society dictates that we're polar opposites, but that's because society, by definition, can only look at the big picture. Apart from our external differences, Millie and I share a lot of the same mentality. I'm not concerned with making Millie 'act black' because that, in and of itself, would be stereotyping, no matter how innocuous. I made her black because that was the image I had in my head; the only thing I'm concerned about now is making her a good character. Human. Organic.
And, we dream of home I dream of life out of here Their dreams are small My dreams don't know fear I got my heart full of hope I will change everything No matter what I'm told How impossible it seems We did it before And we'll do it again We're indestructible Even when we're tired And we've been here before Just you and I
Don't try to rescue me I don't need to be rescued
