Whirling blades met the hammer’s handle, barely lifted in time to keep the roaring chainsaw out of Somerled’s face. The clash created an ear-splitting screech as metal tore against metal, drowning out even the guttural growl of the green-clad soldier’s weapon. A wicked grin spread across the monster’s face, and with a roar of his own, faintly heard over the terrible shriek, he pushed forward against the mountain of a man.
A powerful thud stopped the roar and the screech, the engine of the chainsaw catching from the sudden force. The monster’s vision shook, and with Doomguy’s boot shoved into his gut, he was forced backwards. His hands ripped free from the hammer, and the great weight slammed into the ground with a mighty crash.
With one quick rev of the chainsaw, the metal teeth whirled back to life, and the soldier rushed the now defenseless Somerled, roaring death at the ready. The monster threw himself to the ground, crashing down with a heavy thud, the rumbling metal monstrosity occupying the space he’d been just a moment ago. A foot slammed down just to the right of the monster’s head, the other tottering haphazardly just inside his peripherals.
Somerled planted one hand firmly on the ground, the other shooting forward and latching onto the soldier’s ankle. An exclamation of some sort escaped the soldier, almost unheard over the roaring of the chainsaw, before his feet were ripped out from under him, the monster pushing himself back up in the same, swift movement. Any thumps given by the falling soldier were easily drowned out by the chainsaw, and the monster kicked himself forward, vaulting over Doomguy, towards his weapon.
With as much speed and grace as he could muster, the storm spirit scooped up the hammer, slowly lifting it above his head. Behind him, the engine of the chainsaw suddenly cut back off.
CRASH
He slammed the hammer into the ground behind him, shattering the floor just to the right of the soldier, missing the green-armored gunner with space to spare. The black hole of a gun barrel rose swiftly into his vision, almost in slow motion.
CRA-BOOM
A thundering blast rattled the walls, echoing back and forth down the halls until it was no more than a mere rumble. Somerled stared after the olive figure of the intruder skidding down the hall, his eyes briefly flashing over to his newly-mangled left hand. Shrugging it off, he closed it around the handle of the hammer, lifting the weapon up and sprinting down the corridor.
Before he could close even half the distance between him and his foe, an even bigger behemoth burst out from one of the adjoining rooms.
“Shit!” the monster yelled, feet kicking into a weird half-gallop as he tried to slow down, momentum carrying him onwards. Knowing there was no way he was going to stop in time, the monster dropped the weapon. Metal screeched across the ground, the weapon slowly coming to a stop before tapping the heels of Grundy, who the monster had already juked around. “You can use that!” the now disarmed spirit shouted back, keeping his pace up.
His gaze shot back forward, eyes locking on the spot he’d expected the intruder to lay, crumpled on the ground. Instead, he found the soldier back up on his feet, and himself staring at the barrel of yet another gun. The first shot blasted out, piercing the monster’s left arm, quickly followed by more, haphazard shots, and he dove into an adjoining room, out of sight.
Breathing in deeply, Somerled pressed himself against the wall just around the corner. A seemingly ceaseless barrage of gunfire and shouts from the hallway filled his ears. He couldn’t close the distance when the green bastard had guns. Someone else would need to get close enough and distract him before the monster could jump out again. Perhaps he could try throwing something?
As his mind frantically searched for something he could do to close the distance, he didn’t hear the volley of firearms cut out, and the powerful roar of the chainsaw rev back to life. Not more than moments later, a figure rounded the corner, yelling some sort of nonsense over the rumbling of the engine, and swung at the monster. Somerled instinctively brought his already-ruined hand up and slammed the whirling blades away. Blood splattered across both of the warriors, the metal teeth tearing into the limb before the entire machine was sent spinning across the room, wrenched out of the soldier’s grip.
Somerled drew in another, sharp breath as Doomguy brought back his fist. A burst of chilled air escaped the monster, and the fist slammed into his face. Stars flashed across his vision, and his only good hand shot forward, clamping onto the soldier’s helmet. Incoherent shouts escaped the spirit, and soon the intruder was sent flying back into the hallway. For a moment, Somerled paused, and he wondered why he just threw the guy with guns away from him. With a small shrug, he charged back in.
