Raw Onion, Lyra

The proceeding months have been wonderful. For the first time in her life, she was living her dream. She was living comfortably as the head chef of these people. It was a challenge as the tools she had to use were primitive and she had to learn how to cook meat. However, Lyra was always there to give a helping hand.

Whenever monsters attacked from the shadows, she was quick to drop everything to protect the people. They were her citizens to protect now and she felt a responsibility towards them, but as soon as the threat went away, she went back to her one and only passion.

Lyra would become a dear companion. Every night, after they were finished with the dinner rush, they’d just hang out together. It was kind of weird, her whole life, Raw’s definition of family was always felt like a debt that needed to be paid, to have something so give and take was kind of an eye opener.

For the first time, she would bless the life Omni had given her. Sadly, it didn’t last.[/spoiler]


Suddenly, the Pegasus was alone.

She didn’t know how it happened. She was with Lyra and the other man but suddenly the fog overtook them and everyone else was gone.

“Lyra!” She called out, frantic to find her friend. “Lyra! Where are you?”

There was no reply.

Raw’s large expressive eyes were welling up with tears. The closest thing she had to a real sister was now gone, uncertain if they would ever meet again. Her heart broke, as she knew she couldn’t keep her promise anymore.

“I’m sorry.” She said, as she landed on the ground and trotted forlornly forward.

Raw Onion, Lyra

“You’re so passionate about your cooking. Why did you let your mother control you like that?”

“It wasn’t just her. It was everyone.”

A month or so earlier, Raw and Lyra were getting ready to occupy their sleeping bags for the night after a long day of cooking. They were having their usual casual conversation, though this one had gotten a little heavier than usual.

“The generals would always talk about the evils the orcs would commit. They’d tell us how it was our duty to serve, and the ponies bought it so much that they’ve gotten into the charade as well, shaming any young person who decides against enlisting. It’s gotten so bad that there were not enough ponies in the workforce. We’ve gotten so close to running out of food too many times for comfort. Of course, those that enlisted got more rations. That’s how they get you I guess.”

“Sounds like a horrible place.” Lyra responded.

Raw sighed heavily as Lyra put a hand on her shoulder.

“When we first met, that goblin you killed. That was your first one, wasn’t it?”

“Yes.” She reluctantly responded, taken aback by the sudden question.

“I wouldn’t know what my first was. My battalion focused on hit and run tactics; we never got to see the end result of the orcs we hit. Even though it is obvious that an extended hoof falling from sky would be instant death for most, it was just easy to pretend they were just knocked out or something.

“But one day, my platoon was raiding this orc camp. I struck this goblin who was standing next to a crude building. We both crashed into it and the whole thing collapsed on top of us, trapping us inside.

“I got to watch every second of the goblin, his brain damaged, his body broken, coughing up blood, unaware that I was even there. It reminded me so much of how some of my fellow soldier have fallen it just…”

That’s all she could spit out for she was sobbing uncontrollably now. Lyra moved in close and gave her a hug which the pony returned, soaking the elf’s shoulder with tears.

“It was so senseless!” She yelled between the tears. “What did I sacrifice my soul for?”[/spoiler]

Lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t realized how far she had wondered. The swamp had quickly swallowed the landscape and it was the only thing ahead. There was no turning back, she wouldn’t know the way anyways. She had to move forward, and she hoped to Omni that Lyra was ahead somewhere.
