With an indignant grunt, I haul my sorry body from the ground just in time to watch this pirate fellow dispatch the troll. It is awe inspiring, to say the least. He moves with the agility and speed and technique of a seasoned combatant. It is clear this man is no stranger to such encounters. With the constant, sustained assault the troll has been taking from various sources, he succumbs to Crow's onslaught. I watch with an amused look on my face as he drives his strange, intricate weapon into his enemies heart and WHY DO I NOT HAVE ONE OF THOSE!?
The beast falls, the ground quaking beneath my feet. Its life spurts forth, soiling and soaking the earth below. No matter. It is clear I did not make matters worse, as the continuous amount of damage the plasma-fire caused certainly weakened the troll. Yes. I helped. Me. I did some of this.
I analyze the battlefield. So much carnage, so so much. In a way, it is tragically beautiful. Or just beautiful really. At any rate, I jog to the gathering of secondaries before me. The small group consists of Captain Crow, The General, whose name escapes me, and another secondary I have not had the pleasure of meeting.
"... say we haul wind, and smartly? Think this place has been measured fer its chains for a little while now."
Quaint. I address the three of them. It is my turn to put in my two cents.
"That is an understatement. We are outnumbered and these monsters admittedly capable fighters, and are certainly not green to the battlefield.
Puns now? I have sunk to a new low.
"We need to rally the rest of our fellows and make haste for an exit." I jerk my thumb back to the forest ruins behind us.
"There is likely a larger complex of ruins that lead to a temple of some sort either underground or on the surface. I fear we would be running into a literal dead end, if a defensible one. We could perhaps ride out this storm from the confines of whatever temple or ruins we find, but I advise against such a plan. It would likely result in our meaningless deaths, as the enemy's numbers seem endless. We could run for the treeline, but whatever group we manage to pull together would likely be split apart from the dense forestry and constant chase the orcs will undoubtedly give, and on top of that, they know this land far better than you or I. I do not think our forces will survive this onslaught for much longer, at least, not without casualties.
As I hear the words coming from my mouth, I begin to realize how terrible our options are. We let ourselves be surrounded and caught off guard, and no amount of denying it or quarreling will change that.
"We all have a common goal now, and that is escape. I suggest we work together until we are free of these annoying brutes. Now, unless any of you have a better escape route, I suggest gathering our allies and running for the cover of the woods."
The more I talk of this particular plan, the more I begin to doubt it's success rate. I am a scientist, not a strategist. I simply see logic, but logic has no meaning in this situation, in this world.
God I hope one of these strange beings has some sort of strategic knowledge.
