I dunno, probably has some old English or latin origin I suppose.

Evidently it's called a trunk because the similar part of the horse-drawn carriage used for storage was also where the driver would brace his feet while driving (or so says the internet). I think the American 'trunk' just came about because it's used to store things, like a regular luggagy trunk.

Next we're going to discuss why in America 'fanny' means buttocks and in the UK it means something else entirely. Go!
