Zack frowned as he looked out at the lake of lava and didn't hear any responses to his shout. He had faith that the others had made it, but at the same time felt that it would have been nice to actually see them to back up that faith. He waved his right hand in front of his face, blowing some of the thick ash that filled the air away from him for a few seconds, at least. He noticed the ash less and less now, and figured that it was maybe because he was getting used to it. That, or his lungs were just filled with the gunk, already, and he would fall over dead from it soon. Luckily, Omni supposedly would just bring him right back. Supposedly being a key word.
He tried to dismiss that thought from his mind. It just didn't make sense to mill over a hypothetical death when he had so narrowly avoided a real one only seconds earlier. So he pushed the theories aside for the time being, and resumed his search from this vantage point. It seemed fruitless, but just as he was convinced it was time to move and search for the others in some other way, he heard an impact behind him. He quickly turned to see that the fourth man, the newcomer who had watched the battle from above, had touched down in a roll right by him.
As he turned into the cloud that bellowed up from the impact, Zack instinctively held up his left hand to shield his eyes from getting any more of the ash in his eyes. At the same time he reached up and grabbed the handle of the Buster Sword in his right hand. He had no intent on drawing it, it was just such a habit that he didn't even notice himself doing it most of the time. The cloud dissipated and the the newest arrival stood, so Zack lowered his arms and relaxed in response.
The man's question was simple, and echoed the same thoughts Zack had. Things had gotten out of control pretty quickly, so there was little else to do but simply have faith in the others. They could both confirm that at least half of the group had made it, after all.
"I think so," Zack simply replied with a nod.
A momentary silence fell between the two as Zack caught his breath and let his head clear for a moment, and his newest friend, he hoped, appeared to be doing the same. It didn't take long to collect himself, so Zack simply picked up where they had left off, as though they hadn't just narrowly avoided a fiery death.
"Couldn't tell you what that was all about, though," Zack said, all of a sudden. "Those two guys showed up just showed up on that dragon, looking for trouble. Me and that girl, Miranda, were traveling with another guy, but the other two got him. Or maybe he left with them. Hell, I'm really not sure what happened."
Zack paused, thinking for a moment. There was no reason not to explain everything to this guy, maybe he could help fill in some blanks.
"Don't know about that sharpshooting wizard, either. I just hope he and Miranda got out alright. I wouldn't wish that lake of lava on anyone. Except that dragon." Zack continued, still a little annoyed from his scuffle with the beast and his tamer. "Could you tell what was going on from up here? Come to think of it, I'm Zack, if you didn't hear. What was your name?"
Zack offered his hand out for a handshake, a simple gesture of kindness in a wasteland that showed less and less by the minute.
