Radiant light. A concussive blast. In an instant, the heavens themselves tore open and unleashed their divine wrath down upon the hapless hellspawn. A scream she could not hear rose up from the lips of the star-spangled pierrot, her flesh searing, her senses upended, her body rattled. Clownpiece collapsed onto a ground filled with errant shards of metal and asphalt, the debris cutting shallow grooves into her, but beneath the agonizing lightning burns zigzagging across her flesh, she didn’t feel these small wounds.
Time passed. How much, the fairy couldn’t tell. With her vision black, her ears ringing, and the thick, overwhelming stench of ozone and searing flesh—her flesh—choking her out, the only thing she could use to tell the time was the intermittent throbbing of her lightning-scorched skin, pounding in tune with her racing heart. A soundless groan escaped her as she worked her arms under her prone form, fighting through the agony.
Again! Again these mooks of hers failed to protect her. Failed to keep everyone occupied while she rained hell down upon them! Even with so many already, she needed more. More lunatics! More bodies to throw in the way! If overwhelming force couldn’t do it, then what about overwhelming numbers? Gritting her teeth with newfound determination and swelling with lunatic power, Clownpiece rose up, every inch of her singed body screaming in pain. Hellish pain, welcome pain. Her tattered and shredded dress—torn asunder by the minute mage’s attack—held on by mere threads, but the resolute little fae paid that no mind.
Mad purple eyes met driven brown ones. The tiny doctor seemed almost taken aback, her mouth moving, but no words coming out. What? Scared speechless? Clownpiece tried to say. Her chest heaved with soundless laughter, but all she could hear was the ringing in her ears. Shantotto readied her staff, dazzling, iridescent light swirling and coalescing around its similarly vibrant focus. Two hellish flames sprung up on either side of the Lampad, burning fervently as though summoned from the river Phlegethon itself.
From the fires emerged a pair of hell fairies, one clad in white, her long, purple hair tied in twintails, a similarly-colored sunflower clutched to her chest, the other clad in navy blue, her red hair tied back in a braid, a large rose in her offhand. With a silent laugh, Clownpiece swept her torch up, high into the air, casting its brilliant magenta light not only upon her two new allies but all of the infernal vanguard within range. Red immediately hurled herself forward, diving recklessly through the air towards the Tarutaru.
Shantotto’s eyes widened as she drew her Stardust Rod back, desperately trying to raise the staff to defend herself in time. The tiny fairy barrelled into the even tinier magician, and the good doctor was hurled backward, sent rolling and tumbling over the gravelly ground until she was abruptly stopped, the back of her head smacking against the crumbling remnants of a streetlamp, jarring loose the rust and paint. Clownpiece cackled madly, her laugh unheard by her and distorted by her newfound deafness as Purple floated up and backward, letting loose a shining volley of six tri-colored lasers. With perfect timing, the nymph swept her torch again, casting its glow over the dazed Tarutaru, too disoriented to offer resistance as three pairs of hellish beams slammed into her, one after another.
Bolts of brilliant plasma seared through the air, the changing tide forcing the survivors’ guard to tear their attention from the legions of hell to try to take down this new menace. Clownpiece leaped up into the air, grinning wickedly in spite of the ache weighing her down. The air, once laden with the fetor of blood and decay, now only smelled of fire, smoke, and sulfur. Just like home. The festive fae swung her torch out, conjuring up a line of bright bullets and throwing them at the organized army below. Her own barrage was joined by Purple’s and Red’s, dozens upon dozens of shimmering stars raining down on the hapless infantry. The soldiers’ well-kept formation collapsed as they scattered, everyone desperately out for themselves in the face of a chaotic bullet hell.
The chthonic army surged forward, throwing themselves through the dazzling curtain of missiles, swords at the ready, shields raised above them, protected from the onslaught in ways that their adversaries were not. In no time at all, the Hell Knights were upon them, the steel of their demonic blades flashing as they hacked at the scrambled Stormtroopers.
Her work there done, the energetic Lampad swiveled back to Shantotto, still laughing that twisted laugh in spite of how ragged and hurting she was. The mousy mage, looking a little burnt around the edges, glared up at Clownpiece, the crystal in her staff glinting with a magical light. The fairy simply shook her head and deftly twirled her torch, its purple flame flashing. Shantotto clutched her chest suddenly, mouth contorting in a silent scream, and the pierrot simply sneered. Music to her ears!
Now if only she could hear it.
