Kyle Reese has volunteered to go back to 1984 to end the war and the last ditch attempt to kill John. Just as John stood at the time displacement portal, he disappeared.

The fountain In front of him was confusing. Was this a ruse of Skynet to confuse him?!! Only time would tell.
