If you're familiar with the universe, I highly recommend the Night Lords trilogy by Aaron-Dembski Bowden. Antiheroes, millennia-old grudges, politics, hope, despair, and violence. The main characters are essentially space batman, if that helps at all.

I hear great things about this trilogy

I'm not surprised you do. It's one of the best series I've ever read.

I also recommend pretty much anything by Robert J. Sawyer. Very good Sci-fi author.
