I think it would be cool if we had like, a "standard system" with at least a small sun and some slightly larger planetoids? That was you can have all the really fun realistic space battles that use gravity and planets as opposed to just a huge void. The planets don't have to be habitable, or even have atmosphere, but I feel like you cut out a lot of the possibilities when you remove larger objects.
In order to alleviate the issue of size, you could create relays that make each area of the verse "smaller" with just empty space in between.
We also have to consider RELATIVE size. 10 AU isn't a huge amount of space if you're travelling at interstellar speeds. If you're in a spacecraft (which you almost always would have to be outside of space stations and tiny habitable planetoids) the actual SIZE of the verse matters less.
