Day One: Part 1
#87
As Link returned to his meal, Ganondorf found himself envying the boy. With just a few words, the Gerudo saw life return to the Hylian. His posture straightened and a light returned to his eyes. Of course, the Demon King had merely said what would put the boy into a fighting mood once again, and while none of it was a lie, neither was it the heart-felt message of kindness that some might think it was. Ganondorf was quite skilled in manipulating people, of having them think they were in control when it was he all along. Link, for all his vaunted courage and fighting acumen, was as simple to toy with as a doll, as demonstrated by the boy’s visual signs of heightened mood.

The King of Evil wished it were as easy to lighten his own mood. Over the course of just a few hours, Ganondorf had felt the heights of satisfaction, and the depths of depression. First, his fight with the strange glowing man. An easy victory, particularly since the Goddesses had smiled upon him and Link had arrived with his strange weapon. After sending the man skyward, the Gerudo had felt a rush as he’d snatched up the man’s bag and left the scene with Link. If all his encounters on this island were this easy, he’d have no trouble taking the top position.

Unfortunately, his next battle had erased that delusion quite thoroughly. Ganondorf remembered the armor-clad woman well, from both his arrival in the Omniverse, and the struggle against the dragons in Camelot. She was skilled with her gun, but this time she had proved equally capable with a blade. Even in his ultimate form, Ganon, she had survived, and Link’s bomb-throwing device didn’t seem to be able to stop her either. Still, such a beating was a lesson more than a defeat, one which Ganondorf had resolved to put to use when Karl Jak’s announcement had come over the island. The Gerudo had thought back to what he had been given, the item still stowed in his bag. He was still unsure as to what he was meant to do with the item, and their host’s offer had been enticing.

What a fool he was. The whole thing was a catastrophe. Neither himself, nor Link, were able to gain hold of the prize for more than a brief moment. Additionally, they had both received more injuries trying to lay claim to it. And to Ganondorf, their failure hurt far worse than even the fiery pain left in his shoulder from Link’s sword. Though, he supposed, it was really Samus’ blade… at least for now.

Finishing a few last bites of the dry, nearly inedible meat that had been provided with him, Ganondorf did find himself grateful over a couple of things. Firstly, that they had been able to take that man’s bag, and with it two more days of food for each of himself and Link. And secondly, that he had a companion to work with. Despite his and Link’s differences, their shared experiences in Hyrule had actually brought them together here. So, though his body ached and burned with bruises and cuts and every movement of his arm sent another shock of pain through his body, Ganondorf rose to his feet and looked to Link.

“Come, boy. We need to be going.”

“Where to?” Link asked, readying himself to leave.

“We’re going to track down your sword.”

And with those words, the Hylian smiled. Oh, he tried to hide it. Ganondorf could read his foe like a book, just as he was able to back in Hyrule. Strangely, his own return smile was far less forced than it used to be. Each nodded to the other, a purpose setting their path, and they moved off.
