This.
I've wanted to see something this like this happen for a long time (though I nearly forgot to mention it here at all before you brought it back up in that once sentence, lol) and I think it'd be amazing and would make a lot of sense for a future staff saga.
I mean, come on? The two biggest and most influential NPC factions/nations going to war with each other? It's so obvious!
And of course, it'd spark a lot of incentive for factions to vie for one side or another in order to avoid being crushed by the opposing alliance or gain some repute and brownie points with the nation their fighting for. It'd be really interesting to see player-run factions just go on an all-out war against one another, and having Primes that are leading their own armies just duke it out in the midst of battle.
We could even add some more strategical and technical elements to the game, and make it more of a DA-esque "luck or chance" kind of thing. Whether you win or lose battles and encounters could all factor down to how your troop morale is, how familiar your men are to the terrain your fighting on and how high your numbers are. Stuff like that.
It also gives me some interesting shit to do with Jon. Since as his story progresses he'll learn more and more about the truth of the Empire's practices and methods, he'd eventually grow to despise the Empire, and if war started he'd most likely pledge his sword and service down to Aragorn. It gives me a chance to write out the political intrigue and feudal warfare kind of stuff that you'd actually see watching Game of Thrones/reading A Song of Ice and Fire.
Take note, staff!
I want this at some point.
