The continued gathering and passing of various entities was beginning to wear on the koinobori, with the splash of another falling into the fountain finally sending the kite rolling away from the crowds.
As fun it was to watch their smooth movements and changing expressions, even if their conversations simply flew over the carp's head, it felt it was as good a time as any to move on from the place, maybe head home and resume its hibernation, perhaps stop by the city on its way?
But as it flopped onto its stomach for the seventeenth or so time, gaining not-too-considerable distance but good enough distance from most of the others, it finally realized that something was-- is...a bit off.
Out-of-place or odd, like a new back pocket thanks to that knife which just ripped several holes into your jeans.
Eyes drop to pectoral and pelvic fins, watching them bulge and burp at a rate far slower than the speed of thought, then rise to survey the expansive whiteness, which should have been gone by now -- in fact, minutes behind now.
Having just woken up, even if it was by interruption that resulted in less than substantial restfulness, is no excuse alone for this sudden drudgery -- it is only barely drowsy at this point, head still swimming a little but awake just enough to be lucid and capable.
As a pair of human arms and rat legs pop out of and then back into their sockets, the fish raises itself up, examining the surrounding horizons.
The memory of the blank figure in the darkness rises up, and its mind clicks.
This again....
It had thought at first that it was a joke, or perhaps the person had even simply been ill-informed -- but no, apparently this is not the case.
Defenses and guards had been put in place, but still...caught unawares, or maybe struck a deal?
The fish's mind rolls with the possibilities of how this could have happened, struggling to formulate a comprehensive collective.
Then it settles, with a puff of imaginary smoke, as in gears having ground their cogs down to nothing, yet still meshing against one another.
Sighing, shrugging what little shoulders it has, the fish offers up only a slight, awkward smile.
It's no use worrying about now, is there?
In fact, this could be a good thing!
Another world, different maybe a bit, new probably not, but still--! --more places and times to explore, a whole other universe to wander, watch, note, remember, study, know, relax, rest-- its mouth opens into a wide O, releasing a soft jangling sound from its throat.
...But perhaps catch a few Zs first, hm?
Not here, though, it decides, glancing at the filled emptiness around it --for this area is far too busy.
It stares at all of the folks coming from who-knows-where; it would be foolish to think this was all there is, and just plain dumb if that were the truth of it.
It sits back for a moment to observe their movements again, somewhat more closely this time, to determine the general direction that everyone has been coming and going -- besides materializing in the air and around the fountain, that is.
It doesn't quite feel like backtracking, even if there is some sort of secret teleportation taking place somewhereabouts the structure.
It scans the horizon, faintly re-registering the too-distant structures again.
Buildings, or lone structures, like the fountain?
Portals perhaps.
Looks like it would take a while to get over there -- can't teleport and...the fish glances about itself meekly, then sprints forward a few paces before skidding to a halt...and it can't seem to run very fast on its own, either.
Maybe someone else could...?
It recalls some of the information the other entity had given it -- actually, what did they call themselves again?
It was like the universe thing, kinda infinity-ish-- oh, Omni.
Right.
And something called Omnilium, was it?
A currency, did they say?
Source of power or something of the sorts -- a bit hard to remember, the streamer had been half-asleep through that whole conversation.
It was all a bit crude and rude at the time.
They could have at least waited till they had woken up on their own -- sure that could have taken up to an indeterminably infinite amount of time, but still....
Anyhow, that must be what that new feeling was, that something's-in-my-pockets sense, even though all of its possible pockets should have been turned outwards before it fell asleep.
With a bit of focus on that area of itself, the fish is able to cough up a shiny, iridescent orb of oil-like slickness -- and then, recalling the amount of people milling about, hurriedly shifts its body over the object and crouched down to hide it, uncertain of its particular value, both to present others and to its future self.
Huffing, the fish waggles its tail while staring it down, unable to keep from remarking to itself how coarse this whole situation seems to be so far.
It doesn't move from the spot for a short while, watching as the orb begins to glow white, popping out a piece of itself that rolls across the ground, then begins to bulge, distort, and grow, slowly changing shape into...something else.
The fish, still focusing most of its attention on the smaller moving part, scoops up and swallows the remains, which by then has returned to their darker spectral color; despite thinking to have swallowed a smaller piece, the feeling in its "pocket" feels no less than before.
The still-glowing shape starts to shake and shimmer, scattering a bit of drops on its own; seeming close to disassembling itself, the koinobori realizes that perhaps it is being too vague, and forms a sharper image in its mind of what it wants.
It takes another minute or so, but before long the glow subsides, and the creaky rusted shape of an old swamp-fleeting airboat on wheels sits before it.
The carp gives a grin, glad that at least something seems to be working, even if by a rather roundabout route, and happily waits for its body to shrink to just-under average human height before hopping aboard; as it sets about to getting the thing started, a straw hat pops out of its dorsal fin then floats down to rest atop its head, with a string to tie about its face with which to make certain that it doesn't fall off so easily.
With the sound of revving motors and whirling wind, boat and fish speed off for the horizon
