Dante's Abyss Power Rankings
#1
'Power Rankings' are a concept used in sports and other stuff to rank teams in a way other than things like Win-Loses and other factors. In the interest of not only fostering a little more (friendly) competitiveness, I made power rankings for prospective entrants in Dante's Abyss. I took everyone who posted in the unofficial intent thread, and for those who I wasn't sure about, I put an asterisk next to their name.

Since the event has only just started, the list was made from the following factors -- Activity (overall and recently), potential pairings, experience with the Omniverse, and how established a character is.

Sometime between the 21st and the 25th, I'll post 'End of Pre-Show' Power Rankings that will incorporate activity during the pre-show (as a major, major factor). I will then post lists every IC day so that people can have a sense of their performance.

I wrote it as I imagine Karl Jak would have, if he had been watching these prospects for the last few weeks. From an OOC standpoint, I just want to say that a shit-ton of you are extremely close in terms of writing quality, so there were times when it was really really hard to put some people where they are.

DA Power Rankings – Pre-Preshow

Unranked – Samus – Too little to go off of and too too many variables. As with G-Man, activity during the pre-show could thrust both of you in the upper-half/upper-quarter of the contestant field.

35. (NPC) Pepsiman – Product placement will make you some extra money, but it won’t help you win Dante’s Abyss. This man will have a lot to prove.

34. Ganondorf – Will the Tyrant King of the Desert rise from the sands and slaughter everyone? Will his Silver Dragon propel him into the late game? It’s possible, but it’s also possible that he isn’t able to muster the activity. The question marks hamper his spot in the rankings. Any preshow performance at all could greatly upset these rankings.

33. Mickey Mouse - Activity is why you're here, and nothing else. You have the previous experience to know how to handle yourself in a situation like this, but I need to see some proof in the pre-show that you're ready to roll with the big dogs.

32. Victor – Unknown, which isn’t a bad thing whatsoever. If you show up willing and wanting to prove something, you could build some momentum and go places.

32. Ze Flash – Another unknown, but it’s clear from just the short time you’ve been on the website that you won’t wither away under duress. That’s a good thing, for certain. You just need to get some good insulation (another level 1?) and you can go places.

32. Link – The same questions that I’d ask Ganondorf but with less rust on the package.

30. (NPC) Jason Voorhees - Dis gai. He's got supernatural strength, supernatural durability, and the uncanny ability to be everywhere at once. Plus he's mute and wears a cool hockey mask (personal note - Redwings suckkkk)

29. Jack Frost – There’s a growing talent beneath an icy shell. With a lot of expectations piled on, we expect to either see Jack flourish or wither on the island.

28. (NPC) Aero – This guy has the talent and drive to go places. He’s also cunning enough to survive in an environment familiar to him.

*27. Blackfire – Rusty and untested but a potential sleeper with enough miles to take one more long stab at glory.

26. Vincent – See Ganondorf, Link, and Blackfire – Vincent, if active, could easily worm his way into the top quarter of contestants.

25. Violet – Hampered by being Level 1 and being too fresh (a good partner could make or break). If you throw yourself into this as you’ve done in the past, you’ll have people sweating bullets down the road. I’ll keep an eye on you during the pre-show and we’ll see where you wind up on the eve of Day 1.

24. Neal – One of those really unique characters that will could boom or bust. I expect a really interesting strategy to form from this fourth-waller’s brain and look forward to what he does with the pre-show.

23. Carn_Val –Untested but with an absurd amount of potential to surprise some people who aren’t familiar with his body of work or what an interesting fella he is. I'll have my eyes on you during the pre-show, for sure.

22. Aang/Ezra - Showed his ability to hang with the big boys in the Pale Moors and managed to shine even under a giant personality (Aang). Less familiar with Ezra (apologies), but if the character and writing quality are the same, you shouldn't have a problem with either prospect. Go with whoever you'll be more comfortable with adapting and experiment with, and you could easily claw your way up.

21. Gin – BAW GAWDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. Bring a steel chair. In all seriousness, Gin'll be an interesting fella to watch.

20. Mami/Agnes – Girl went toe-to-toe with Harry Dresden and only got KO’d because of SP. If the Mami that took Harry to the edge is the one that enters DA, y’all better recognize. Less familiar with Agnes, but the same statement said to Aang applies -- if the momentum is the same for both of them, you can rock either and do well.

19. Blink - I need to see how the rust plays a role, but as it stands, I can't deny that you probably have the best chance out of all the recent 'un-retirees.' You might even have been a little higher, but I can't overlook the fact that, as a Level 1 character, you'll be at a disadvantage if you run into a mismatched situation. I'll be curious to see what you write before the 'fun' starts.

18. (NPC) Cindy – She has an Artefact, which will make up for any lack of a starting Weapon, but at the moment, she lacks the gusto to really topple anyone

17. Neku – Somewhat untested, but look for this guy to spin things in a fascinating way and jam his way up the rankings. - Signed up as Harry Dresden instead

*16. Desco – The Final Boss could make a lot of lives miserable. I’ve heard rumblings of a DescoxGuu OTP, which would probably be ‘best for business’ for both of these ladies. I'll be curious to see how Desco adapts.

*T – 14. Edward – A guy with a lot to lose or a lot to gain! I expect that Ed will be willing to do what it takes to prove himself in such a setting.

T - 14. Alain – This guy is cunning enough to weasel his way through many of his peers. When pressed (like he was during his partnership in the Pale Moors), Alain can be a monster.

13. Gildarts – A potential sleeper who could easily get on a roll and start to crush people. The output this guy can generate is staggering, and if he can turn that into diamonds, he will stun.

12. Luffy – Can stretch survive on his own or will the island’s fast pace be his undoing? That will be the biggest factor when it comes to his success, because he already has the ability to doll out pain.

11. Sivo/Okor – Both similar characters and both really awesome characters. They’ll both be limited in DA, but I think that’ll actually bring out more in either of them.

T - 9. (NPC) Android 18 – She has a high handicap, Transformations, and Super Moves. With a good weapon, she will be a headache for the entire island.

T – 9. Strazio – It’ll be interesting to see what this guy’s strategy will be – Like many of the options near the second half of the list, he’ll be someone to keep an eye on before the festivities start and in the opening hours.

8. Sasuke – A potential boom or bust due to activity. Sasuke will either flourish or wilt, and what type of Day 1, Part 1 experience he has will set the tone for the rest of his time on the island. The ‘activity’ question is why the emo ninja isn’t higher on the list.

7. Guu – Probably the highest-ranking ‘boom or bust’ option, but I wouldn’t discount the prep work she’s done with Ambrosia. The variable here will be activity, and if Guu gets the ball rolling, I think the bruhs higher up should start to make contingency plans.

6. Jon Snow – Jon Snow is what I’d consider a ‘silent and deadly’ individual. He’s lower profile than some of the other people in the top 10 of this list, but he packs just as lethal a punch as many of them. Don’t discount the Bastard, or you could wind up being his bitch.

5. Doomguy – So many variables at play with this guy, but it’s clear that he is made for this environment, regardless of what sort of experience he might have on Day 1. He has a unique flair and the grit to go places. Of the higher-ranking players, he’s probably the one who could survive the best without peers.

4. Retane – He will talk trash, he will get in your head, and the worst thing is – He’ll jack up Retane enough people to make you start doubting whether or not he’s all bark and no bite. If this guy winds up with half-decent weapons, he will be a menace, and even if he doesn’t wind up with a half-decent weapon, he will be a menace. The Jack Frost question also provides its own level of intrigue. Retane knows how to play the game. His own worst enemy? Retane.

T-2. Whirda – Skill? Check. Tactical savvy? Check. Unfortunately for many individuals on this list, there aren’t many faults to be found here. Pending some sort of disaster or unfortunate turn-of-events, Whirda will not be a house of cards in this competition. And while her new artefact won't give her too much of an advantage, it provides her (or at least it should provide her) with a lot of momentum and confidence rolling into Dante's Abyss.

T-2. Gilgamesh – The King of Heroes has the ego, the skill, and the guile to manipulate and bulldoze his way into the Finale. But with great ego comes great paranoia… Will Gil thrive or will he be driven mad? That itself might make for one hell of a dramatic story arc.

1. Deadpool – Don’t let his charming nature fool you, this guy wants to kill all of you. He has the charm and skills needed to do so, and expect him take the path of least resistance and thrive pending some disaster. Worse than anything else, he has the experience of how to play the game to win, and while Retane talks a lot of bluster and machismo, its Deadpool’s past life who came within a few gunshots of the Grand Championship.
