Also, litigation and pressing charges are two different things.
For instance, OJ Simpson was found not criminally responsible for his wife's murder (let's not turn this into a debate, that was the ruling and that's all we need for this example), and therefore was acquitted of the crime, however, the pain and suffering caused by his crime, the wife's family sued for, and won. So, although he evaded criminal charges/jail time, he did have to spend an enormous amount of money in a settlement.
I'm not 100% sure if that applies to your case, but if that is the situation, it's not double jeopardy or being charged for the same thing twice, etc. If that's the situation.
