Alright, I've decided I'd like to try and restart the original writing Neal hails from, but I haven't done anything with him since sixth grade, at least in his core design. I was inspired by a movie a friend had me watch and after playing this variation of Neal.
So, the idea is that a there's a sort of sickness going around. It's not contagious, so its method of spreading is unknown, however it is very lethal. A high percent of the people with this plague die, while the rest are left in a vegetative state. It also does not effect the mass population, further adding to the mysteriousness of the sickness. The think about it is that it doesn't effect the body, just the brain. Those who survive are still left in a coma, those who die basically do so by problems originating with the brain, often brought on far too fast; IE Tumors, ALS, hemorrhaging, clots, etc.
That's just the introduction. Neal is one of the first to wake up. Unlike many of the others, he had lived alone and somewhat off the grid, so he never made it to the hospital. He woke up six weeks later in his basement to find an eviction notice in his mail and talk on the news about a possible new pandemic. A day later, he's sitting in his living room and watching TV when he suddenly feels a presence approaching. And bam, another of the "Awakened" appears at his door, dripping wet even though the day was sunny, and begging for help.
The man says he felt this place would be safe and couldn't explain why, that something drew him here. Come to find out, the man had been unable to stop moving - or rather, teleporting - since he awoke. Neal can somehow sense the problem, though thorugh no normal means, and finds himself able to help.
Alright, so that's the introductory plot without spoilers. Here's some WITH spoilers, but they might be detrimental.
So those who survived in comas are called the "Awaken" when they wake up, or "Dreamers" when they're asleep. Awakened have what's called "Adaptive Psionics," though in the original they had simple psionic powers. In this variation, they can theoretically learn all aspects, but many find themselves self-limiting. Neal is, as in every variation of him, eager to break the limits and learn all he can. However, he's not the only one. Neal's base power is Intuition, which means he can understand the psionics of others. But there are problems.
A Dreamer gains power the longer he/she is "Dreaming" similar to the psionic ability gestating in the unconscious mind. Neal doesn't gain the level of power from those he copies abilities from, he simply gains an understanding of how they work. And those who Awaken later may find that their powers are less frightening than the aforementioned Teleporter, and more "useful."
And here's the big part. The Adaptive Psionic abilities create a "pool" in large numbers, meaning if you're around enough Awakened or Dreamers, you can effectively raise your joint power level. The dark side to this is that you can kill another Awakened and permanently gain an even greater boost in power. This extends to humans. If humans gather around an Awakened, the Awakened gains a boost. If an Awakened kills a human, he/she is permanently boosted, but not as much as killing another Awakened.
The original concept for Neal was not nearly as complex, but I'm reviving his epic with my greater grasp of grammar and spelling. :xd: However, I admit I borrowed and mixed a few concepts, I just want to ask if it sounds TOO much like one thing, and that if it does, are there any good suggestions on how to dilute the relation?
