I think we have plenty of heroes. Harry Dresden, Samus (even if Greg will argue the neutral route, we all know better), Proto Man. Link.
We're mostly full of people who are more... ambiguous. Folks, like Guu, who aren't a villain or a hero. Which is fine.
As for picking a character, I'll give you the same advice I give everyone. Try to write a paragraph or two with each person on the list. If it feels forced, or just doesn't feel right, move on to the next. This character will be your partner for some time, so pick someone that you enjoy, deep in your heart, writing as. No point picking someone who you'll switch from after a topic or two.
