History
Due to the scant nature of Gogo's canon backstory I have extrapolated from what we see on the screen.
Gogo is seventeen years old, and is a monster. Sold by her parents to the Yakuza, she was trained from an extremely young age to be a skilled combatant, focusing on melee weaponry - with which she soon proved to be a prodigy.
Naturally, this upbringing did not lead to a very healthy relationship with authority or her own place in the world. Gogo was originally intended to serve as an assassin who could use her youthful appearance to get into places other people couldn't. By the time she was in her early teens, however, she was more than a handful for her Yakuza 'handlers' given that she could murder them without breaking a sweat and did so on a semi-regular basis.
That changed somewhat when she came into the service of O-Ren Ishii, who was waging a bloody war to unite the Tokyo underworld. She admired O-Ren's leadership and proved herself to be an extremely capable bodyguard in O-Ren's service.
She would probably have maintained that position for decades, but instead Black Mamba killed her with a piece of broken furniture, and here we are.
