The battlefield groaned like the mountain was alive, creating an ominous murmur that smothered us with an invisible force. Can we win? Or, will all this sweat and blood be for nothing? My lungs seared, and the flesh below my hips throbbed from Victor's surprise attack. The longer the fight dragged on, the deadlier it became, and I was fastly approaching my body’s limitations.
Until the chemical bath, I wasn't anyone special, merely another Doctor. I'm not some heavenly being, or a wizard, or even some creature from outer space. I'm just a crazy bitch with a bad attitude, who can't seem to catch a break.
Jibril unleashed a black ray that blanketed the assassin in a devilish aura and sent him tumbling backward. Meanwhile, Retane stood back, shrouded by smoke with a look of fierce concentration on his face. It wasn't until I caught the glow of power that illuminated his putrid, purple blood-soaked, skin, that I noticed he was up to something.
The force of his rage was aimed right at my guardian angel. If I didn't do something quick, I was going to lose the only good thing going for me. My legs moved faster than my brain could think and I bolted at Jibril, shoving her out of harm's way. As the ball of energy barreled its way towards me at a devastating rate, I caught the look in Jibril's eyes when she realized what I had done. At the last second, my partner grabbed my hand before it slipped away and pulled me to her.
The brutal and destructive force of the blast was evaded thanks to Jibril. However, his blast grazed my body just enough to strip away my flesh and left my arm limp, hanging in shreds. Shock overcame me, and I let out a weak chuckle, unable to move or speak. Before our opponents could take advantage of their upswing, nature called a timeout. Brimstone rained on us in a flurry of chaos as the mountain reminded us that no one was safe.
My angel sent from heaven took this time to rescue me again and carried me away like a knight in shining armor. She then flew us to refuge behind a giant slab of rock that embedded itself in the earth. My wound was atrocious and even biting my tongue couldn't keep the tears from streaming down my face. This was bad; this was really bad.
Retane and Victor ever so cleverly crept up on the other side of the sheetrock. With both their backs pressed against the foundation, Victor took a moment to shoot a satisfied look at his Big Green Guy. He let out a pleased snicker before praising, "Nice shot!"
"Bitch didn't see it coming!" the Namekian bragged, letting out chortle and raising a clawed fist in the air. Retane took a peak on the other side of the sheetrock that separated them and could see Harley holding her gun. Signaling his comrade, the Namekian and the assassin sprang from their position.
Retane went in guns blazing as usual, sending disseminated blasts all throughout the area. Victor came in like a shifty fox, cutting my hand free from the revolver. Then he unexpectedly landed face first into a boulder. As the dust began to settle from the Namekian's onslaught, they were surprised that they were alone behind this wall of rock.
Standing behind the bastards in the semi-enclosed space, I fired my gun in the air and yelled: "Now Jibril!" She was quick to engage, and with a fire of her holy ray, Jibril caused a landslide of rock and slab to cover our opponents. Once dirt, rock, and debris from the mountain covered them completely, she took her place beside mine to wait.
Moments before, I reluctantly asked Jibril to make her scythe red hot by lava and cut off my limp limb. It hurt like a bitch, but I was lucky to be alive. We acted fast and devised a plan that involved using everything we got which now included my severed arm. As we came up with our strategy, Jibril had her doubts.
"It will work," I protested.
Jibril nodded her head in agreement, "Gods will bleed too with enough force."
With that being said, I propped up my hand with a revolver and around a rock snowman to set the trap. I even made sure that the gun in my severed arm was easily seen but still hidden enough to establish the illusion.
As my partner and I stood to admire our handiwork of the collapsed mountainside, I couldn't help but laugh. Jibril turned to look at me in confusion which only made me cackle harder. “It looks like we got the upper hand now," I said as I tried to nudge her with my one good arm playfully. She didn’t get it.
“Thank goodness it worked,” I breathed. Adrenaline and my own craziness was the only thing keeping me standing. However, the celebration was short lived as Retane busted out from under the debris with a roar, carrying Victor with him.
