This would still need area defence. A shield with a 3ft diameter wouldn't need it, but you're basically making a big shield that's over 9ft wide and wrapping it around in a circle for this, which definitely does need area defence. Even if all your stated numbers are "3ft", it's still bigger than 3ft.
