Next Steps
#2
Cell floated under the water, watching the disturbed surface rage against his violent submersion. He put a hand to his throbbing cheek and stared through the rippling ocean surface. A figure hovered above, his silhouette outlined by the sun. His assailant was unmoving, ostensibly waiting for Cell to rise out of the seas and seek revenge. That was exactly what the bio-android was going to do, but he didn’t like that it was expected.

He squinted to force clarity into the blurred and shadowed figure but it did him no good. Who would be so brazen as to attack him while he sparred with a temporary energy clone of himself? Had Goku or one of the other Earth warriors been summoned to this Omniverse as well and decided that Cell was up to no good? Not many would strike him unexpectedly or pre-emptively like that, except maybe Vegeta or Trunks. The royal bloodline of the saiyans ran hot. Goku would have interrupted and demanded a rematch, and the rest would have cowered or fled. He couldn’t ascertain if his attacker was someone he knew from his world, but he would soon find out.

A fish darted past Cell’s chest and threaded through his arms suspended in the waters. Whoever it was, Cell didn’t mind. Fighting himself was all well and good, but another flesh-and-blood opponent would prove a more enjoyable experience. As much as he could learn by sparring with himself, the true entertainment sprung from besting another.

Energy traced the tips of Cell’s finger tips and fed into a spinning red disc, its core a deep pink. Bubbles raced furiously from the heated ki and towards the surface of the water, likely telegraphing the bio-android’s plan. Cell hurled the Death Saucer and chased it, letting it burst out of the sea first and following after in the steamy mist it left behind.

The mysterious figure’s body blinked out of sight as the Death Saucer sliced through the air where it once hovered and into the distance. Cell felt a burst of wind against his back spun, crossing his arms over his face and absorbing the punch he knew was coming. He sailed backwards but he was in control; he exerted his inner ki outside his body and halted his movement in an instant.

Cell locked his eyes on the attacker. Face hidden behind a silver helmet and visor, the rest of the body covered in metal armour, the mystery figure did not ring any bells for the bio-android.

“I take it you have a problem with my presence on this beach?” Cell asked. “Or more to the point, a problem with me sparring myself?”

The silver clad attacker didn’t respond. Cell couldn’t think why this thing had decided to pick on him. Was it an agent of the Empire, tracking the one responsible for murdering the squadron that pursued him and Davin? Had Davin activated some robotic experiment to subdue Cell in case the bio-android attempted to hunt him down and kill him? Cell didn’t like being in the dark.

“Fine. I’ll beat you to within an inch of your life and then you can tell me.” Cell shrugged. “Seems you’re taking the hard way, but I never turn down a good fight. But I think the polite thing to do would at least be to exchange names. I’m Cell, the most perfect being in all creation. And you are?”

Silence followed Cell’s request. “All right, if you want to be like that. I’ll make up a name for you. How about...Arsehole-who-blows-up-my-clone-and-blindsides-me-to-interrupt-my-training Guy? Hmm...no, that’s too wordy. Let’s just go with Silver, since you’re obviously a fan of the colour. Any objections? No? Didn’t think so.”

Silver hurtled towards Cell and threw a kick for his side. Cell lifted his forearm and the two collided. Pushing the limb away, Cell thrust his left hand forward and loosed a bolt of energy. Silver bore the brunt of the force on his chest, floating backwards with steam wafting from his glistening, ornate plate. He rushed forward, driving his fist into Cell’s jaw. Cell recovered, launching his knee into Silver’s stomach, but it found Silver’s awaiting palms instead. Frowning, Cell drew his head back and slammed it into Silver’s helmet, breaking his hold and knocking him back.

Cell barrelled forward and launched into a volley of punches and kicks. Silver weaved in and out of the attacks and blocked where he couldn’t. Cell lashed out with his tail, catching his opponent off-guard. The tail slapped Silver’s midsection, creating an opening as he dropped his defence. Cell’s fist plunged into Silver’s gut, doubling him over. In that moment, Cell slipped behind him and wrapped his tail around his body. He tightened it, constricting Silver’s limbs together, dangling the barb of his tail near the armoured fighter’s neck.

“Maybe I should just drink you and be done with it,” Cell said, poking Silver’s neck gingerly. The seam between helmet, neck and chest was hidden extremely well. The bio-android surmised he would have to forcefully puncture the armour to extract the bio-essence of the human inside. “Unless you want to talk? Maybe tell me why you’re doing this?”

Silver’s limbs trembled. They pushed outwards, against the coiled grip of Cell’s tail. It was overwhelming. Cell’s appendage soon unravelled and Silver crashed his knuckles over Cell’s cheek, knocking him back.

Cell was growing impatient. He wanted to train in peace and this steel clad human was interrupting him. Even worse, he wasn’t easy to put down. But humans were fond of their organs, and Cell knew just how to affect them.

“Take a deep breath in those nice, non-perforated lungs of yours,” Cell said, tapping his index and middle finger against his forehead. Energy pulsed at his finger tips. “It won’t feel the same when I’m done with you.”

Silver dashed towards Cell. The bio-android felt the culmination of his charged power and pointed his extended fingers at his foe.

“Makankosappo!”

The corkscrew beam screamed through the air, penetrating Silver’s chest like a hot knife through butter. Silver fell to the shore with a hole through him.

Cell descended to inspect his handiwork, his feet touching down on the sand. “Maybe I should’ve fought you a little longer, but I have more pressing matters to attend to. Such as my evolution to my perfect body.”

Cell frowned. Why was there no blood streaming from Silver’s wound? Instead, sparks sprayed from the perimeter of the hole.

“A robot?” Cell said. “They couldn’t even send a real live person to fight me?”

Silver shot up and bounced to his feet. “THE EMPIRE WILL NOT FORGET YOU, CELL. YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM US AGAIN.”

The damaged robot blasted into the air like a bullet and faded into the clear blue sky.

“That’s it?” Cell shouted after him. “That’s how it’s going to be, huh?”

The bio-android got no reply from the speck disappearing from his vision.
