If you wanted to count like that:
Round 1: 8 fights (8 top bracket, 0 below)
Round 2: 8 fights (4 top bracket, 4 below)
Round 3: 6 fights (2 top bracket, 4 below)
Round 4: 4 fights (1 top bracket, 3 below)
Round 5: 2 fights (0 top bracket, 2 below)
Round 6: 1 fight (0 top bracket, 1 below)
Round 7: 1 fight (final teams battle)
Round 8: 2 fights (battle for 1st/3rd)
Adds up to 32.
But it's much easier to just count how often a team has to lose, then add on a couple for the final fights.
[you missed out one in round 5, Jeff: from round 4, 3 teams remain at the bottom and 1 team gets sent there from the top, 4 people = 2 fights]
