Double elimination is definitely the best since you're less likely to be 'unlucky', and it doesn't last forever.
A more round robin hybrid thing could work, with all the fights within smaller partitions of the main group. Then grab the top 3 from all the mini tournaments and shove them together. But it'd still take a while. Not as long, but still a while.
