If you use an AoE super, the super attack damage is 'watered down' and split between the people it hits somewhat. So what Usopp said is correct.
Despite this, if I used a T2 super attack against two people, and they each used their own individual T1 super defence (each only protecting themselves), the attack would still go through (but be weakened) - two T1 defences aren't equivalent to an AoE T2 attack, even if it is split between multiple people.
