The Prototype's body is not human. It has not been human since the Blacklight virus consumed it and merely took on the appearance of Alexander J. Mercer. As Mercer himself said "I've become something less than human, but also something more."

The Prototype's body is composed entirely of Biomass, a semi-solid form that merely holds the shape of Alex Mercer. Because of this, he can seemingly recover from wounds nearly instantly by willing biomass around the injury to pull together. This even fixes his clothing, which are biomass constructs as well.

To the onlooker, he appears to heal completely in a matter of seconds. In actuality, he is simply capable of internalizing all Accumulated damage. The more damage he takes, the more his biomass loses integrity. He can still die if enough of his biomass is damaged; his body melting as the biomass loses cohesion.

He cannot recover instantly from Injuries using this method and must resort to his Adrenaline Surge.

The Prototype's body functions like that of a human in the means of tendons and bones, meaning is severed or broken he can be debilitated... however, he can sacrifice excess biomass to instantly rebuild broken or lost structures - even limbs. While this does not actually heal Mercer, it converts Injuries into Accrued damage. He is capable of reattaching limbs, or simply regrowing them over five seconds.
