The buttercup poisoning. Ah, how the Human had tried to do such a thing to the King before and in a sense, it did place its mark on his soul that he didn't stop it. He was there before and speaking of the Royals did concern him in a sense; he had to be careful of this delicate situation. Chara was trying to mess with his trail of thought but there was no way he is going to allow it prevail.

"Honestly, I would be scurrying around for a cure to such an ailment but it has been a long time since I was..away.. unfortunately and I have none of my equipment with me but there is nothing with trying to find a cure in this unusual realm. However, I shall take you to the nearest settlement and if I'm correct, we should arrive there before the day is over if we aren't stopped somehow. Just be sure to stay close to me." he answered as he wrapped his arms behind his back, momentarily looking to position of sunlight in the sky before looking down and walked on.

Chara might had unsettled him somehow but he was more focused on doing what she asked for the time being. However, knowing the child, if any sharp items are around and if there is a betrayal, he will not hold back on attacking her. She already had proven to be just as much of a manipulator as he is but on a lower standard.

He even questions why would Asriel be around such an individual.

While walking, Prometheus floated down besides Chara to keep an eye on her to ensure that she wouldn't have a chance to possibly attack Gaster while his back was turned as he leading the way over in this forest of uncertainty. However, it was sometime before Gaster returned to thinking and while yes, Frisk was the one that chose the path to the Genocide route back in the Underground, it was Chara's influence that steadily possessed them. He has seen what her spirit did and this is why he is very reluctant on trusting her knowing her history of being with the Dreemurrs. She was trouble and she is still trouble, that's why he had contacted Sans and even had several other monsters to intervene.

He was testing them.

"If I have to ask one thing Chara, have you came across Flowey in your time here?" he asked as he wanted to know something. After all, it's not like he knows what they are expecting. "I know this is sudden but I wanted to know."

In fact, Flowey was another individual that caused issues for Gaster as well but in terms of the amount of resets he caused while Sans was fighting against them time and time again.
