Spare time was not something that the group had at this very second. With the threat of enemy troops and artillery crashing down from above coupled with the the enemies that seemed to be popping out of the woodwork, the group didn’t exactly have the time for introductions. Cloud had no time to introduce himself to the group’s new arrival, he had to worry about finding a way out of this shrapnel filled shitstorm. The only way of doing so seemed to lie within heading further into the archipelago. The cavalcade of primes heading deeper into the charred island as the torrential downpour of explosives seemed to be endless.
‘How many explosives could they possibly have?’ Cloud thought to himself as he and his robot companion vaulted over a large, uprooted, mangrove trunk. They were only twenty or so metres behind the rest of the group, but it seemed so much farther than it really was under these conditions.
‘Do you know how far we have to go?’ the blond mercenary questioned, looking at Proto Man. A couple of seconds passed by as he waited for a response, but the robot only responded with a shake of his head. They’d just have to keep moving for the time being.
‘Watch out.’ An oddly familiar voice warned, causing Cloud to stop dead in his tracks. Proto stopping just a few feet ahead of him with a puzzled look on his face.
‘What’s wrong?’ the robot questioned.
‘You didn’t say anything just now?’
The robot replied with a swift shake of his head and a look of confusion. At that moment, a hulking figure burst through one of the barely held together mangrove trees and towards the duo. The oversized darkling charged towards Proto and Cloud, letting out a loud growl as it stomped over the broken trees. The duo halted it’s assault, the blond with his massive grey blade, and the robot with his shield. With nothing else to do, the three of them stood there, locked in place.
‘Well, this is bad.’ Proto Man stated matter-of-factly as the beast, like a broken record, let out another growl. It was accurate to say that this one was much stronger than the last one, though maybe that was because last time the duo weren’t both being engaged at once. They had no time for this, the longer they stood in one spot, the closer one of the many explosions came to ending their lives.
‘We don’t have time for this!’ Cloud exclaimed. To his surprise, his cry was answered by three, perfectly aimed, shots from Cole’s weapons. They struck the creature in the back of the head, breaking it’s focus long enough for Proto and Cloud to throw it off balance. Blink, with her teleportation, landed on the darkling’s backside, plunging her dagger into its flesh several times over before being shaken off. Now angrier than before, the corrupted being grabbed at the purple skinned woman. Proto had other plans in mind though and, with one swing of his energy blade, cleaved off both of the ogre’s forearms. Cloud followed Blues’ lead the mercenary lopped off it’s head, watching as it’s lifeless body dropped to the ground. It was done, and they could finally continue their escape.
‘Let’s go.’ Cloud spoke as he joined Proto Man and Blink, the three of them rejoining the larger group.
Though one thing had bothered the mercenary. He’d clearly heard a voice warn him before, and Blues definitely didn’t hear anything. Had he heard the darkling earlier and just subconsciously reminded himself? No, that couldn’t be it. He’d definitely heard a voice or, at least, thought he had. Either way, he didn’t have the time to split his focus right now. He’d just have to focus on the task at hand.
