Once past the gate, Usopp began to feel a whole lot better about things here. The sun was bright and shining. People were smiling. The sea breeze was cool and salt-scented. It really WAS like home. And without Nami or the others directing him, he felt a slight rush of freedom. He wasn't just Usopp the Straw Hat Sniper here. He was Captain Usopp; greatest pirate on the seas. There were no Devil Fruit eaters to overshadow his glory; no ridiculously overpowered swordsmen or cooks to show him up. It was just him.
Oh yeah... That's right. He was all alone. Loneliness hit the young man like a truck and he collapsed in the middle of a street in a despondent pile. As expected, everyone pretty much ignored him, aside from giving the sobbing man in the street a wide-berth. A few muttered about how crazy could be contagious before hurrying along.
Eventually, Usopp managed to regain his feet, and it only took a few kicks from the local constabulary to help him out. Following the sound of the waves, he made his way to the beach. Maybe he'd see the Thousand Sunny on the waters, all his friends on the deck eager to be reunited with him. He smiled a little at the thought as he climbed a dune and surveyed the beach. Well... no Sunny, but he DID see something else nearby. Seemed like a man was harassing a dog and cat. Usopp would be more surprised that they were humanoid if he hadn't been hanging out with a crocodile dude not too long ago.
For a second, he considered just sliding back down the dune and ignoring the situation. Until he'd spotted the look of terror in the terrier's eyes as she looked to her feline friend. She wasn't afraid for herself, no. She was frightened for her pal: that the cat might be hurt. It struck a chord in Usopp. How often had his friends been worried like that for him? And how often had he felt the same for them? He had to do something.
“G-Get away from them!” Usopp shouted from his dune-top perch, knees shaking and Black Kabuto held aloft. “Or face the wrath of the GREAT CAPTAIN USOPP!!”
There was a moment of silence before the man answered, “Who?”
The sniper's face dropped at the man's sincere ignorance of who he was. He didn't know what he'd expected, really. Even back in his homeworld, no one really knew who he was, other than a member of Luffy's crew. Well, if there was one thing Usopp was good at, it was lying his way out of a mess. He put on his best swagger, thumbed his nose at the man with a grin, and spoke.
“I'm not surprised you haven't heard of me. Everyone who has is dead now, at the hands of my ten thousand blood-thirsty men. Only held in check by my own awesome power, each can slay a hundred marines without breaking a sweat. Even now, they're stationed across the beach, only waiting for my word before they leap into action to erase any person I point to.”
Lowering the Black Kabuto, Usopp pulls a marble from his satchel and lines up a shot as his continues, “But I won't say a word to them. I don't need to. A single shot from my Black Kabuto can capsize an island. Two can tear a continent in half. I've never tried to fire a third, for fear of destroying the very planet. So, you need to ask yourself a question, punk. Do you feel lucky?”
