You got Mimic'd! Problem?
#1
This is a question that's been on my mind for a bit and is now coming up, with Dante's Abyss happening and Malon fighting in it.

Let's take the situation that your character gets in a fight, possibly with someone who has Mimic, but not necessarily. If they do have Mimic they copy your moves, that's all fine and dandy - it's what the power exists for. The fight finishes, you part way, then a few days later you see that your opponent is purchasing some of your moves, or submitting a very similar version to the Move Approvals.

Do you have a problem with other people doing that - purchasing your moves without first asking you for permission, or tweaking it in minor ways before buying it? Do you feel good because someone copies your awesome moves? Do you feel indifferent to it? I'm curious to know!

If enough people DO have a problem with it (and honestly, that's completely fine!) we might even come up with a fancy "please don't steal my moves/I have no problem with you copying my moves" signature thing like the PvP flag? Maybe, possibly?

If i were to copy someone's move, and its a personal move they came up with, something unique, i would atleast put something in there along the lines of : "inspired by playerX" or "Credit for this move goes to playerX". After all, i would appreciate it as well when people give me credit for it, its a sign of respect and a compliment towards your creativity with the move itself.

For me, if there's a good in character justification for it, I don't think I'd have a problem with it. If someone copied or took a slightly modified version of one of my characters' moves after mimicking the character, or training with the character, or spying on the character to study their fighting style, I think I'd be okay with that. In such a case I would appreciate if a one-sentence description of how the move was acquired and from which character included with the move itself somehow, but that overall concept I'm fine with. It becomes a case of my character affecting theirs by how the two have interacted.

The only time I might have an issue is if someone were to use the concept of one of my moves without any IC justification, then I would like to at least be consulted.

(Not that I'm expecting any of my moves to be mimicked like that anytime soon, but there's my two cents on the matter.)

Is this being asked from the person with mimic's perspective or the other one?

Edit: actually I guess it's in the title, but I think the road goes both ways despite the power.

It's hard to say if anything is really original in this very saturated forms of unique mediums where characters are formed from or inspired from.

Is it like, nearly verbatim?

From the perspective of the person that has their moves copied. I was pointing Mimic out because I consider it a "stepping stone" towards permanently acquiring someone else's moves.

As someone who is trying to use Mimic more and more, I'd like input on this.

As someone who has been on the "being mimicked" side of this fence, and plans to be on the mimicking side, personally I'd have no issue with it. Personally, I don't mind if someone later purchases moves they've mimicked from me, and while I might also (personal choice) put in a notification about "acquired from mimicking (character name here) and then training to properly memorize and master" or some such, it doesnt seem like a maaaaajor issue to me.

But I'm pretty laid back, so y'know. :frogpipe:

I would prefer to have it discussed with me (ie. purchasing it). Having said that, I would almost always be fine with it, I just see it as a courtesy. And as Yu said, it would be nice if it was referenced as a move belonging to so-and-so.

Pretty firmly in this boat myself. A heads up or acknowledgement will get you cool points, but otherwise I won't lose sleep over it.

I'm in the same boat as most others. I'd consider it a compliment, so I'd be totally cool with it in most cases.
Curious about me and the characters I play? See the 'Staff' page! See also the rosters for my characters Samus Aran or Enel if you'd like to see examples of well-formatted rosters. Hope you enjoy the Omniverse!

I mean, I could hardly be bothered if other people bought guns. Although, something like my steel guantlets is kind of unique. I can't really complain if someone copies one of my per se 'original' moves. That is what mimic is for, and I like the aspect of it. There are powers between characters that our characters cant control, it just adds to the greatness of Roleplaying on the Omniverse. Seeing someone walk around with the pride that is your move would make your character's blood boil, it's a way we make rivals in a in-character perspective. But I guess this is more of and out of character perspective. I'm on the boat as well. Look at me I'm on a motherfucking boat. Just give da' creds to the original owner and there's no probs.

you could just put in the move description: "Mimicked from (insert name here) . . . then go about the description.

I'd be pretty ecstatic that one of my moves was cool enough to be worth copying, honestly.

As someone who mimicks, I'm not really out to buy other people's moves to begin with.

You sassy bitch...

In all seriousness, I wouldn't be offended by people taking my moves. I honestly think I'd be more amused by other characters pulling them off. XD

Though while I don't see permission as nessary in my case, I would like to be notified that it's happening.
