Medieval Surnames

I need some medieval/fantasy surnames. Post whatever surnames you have.

Apparently the medieval ancestor of my last name is Fletcher.

Medieval names are highly dependent on the country of origin, but the general rule of thumb for English names is that they simply took your job and made it your last name. Smith, Miller, etc. They also liked to use "-son" a lot. Anderson, for example, is a last name derived from a dude who was the son of Ander.

"McSomething" also works. But then again I'm a sucker for that in-joke of Dwarf Fortress where everyone is called Urist McSomething ("Urist McMiner", "Urist McSmartass", "Uristocrat" etc).

Mc or Mac is actually the Celtic way of saying son of, thus your surname would be decided by your fathers first name, Son at the end as pointed out above is the equivalent for the Germanic cultures (English, Dutch, German,Austrian, Swiss, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish) Not sure if the romance cultures have any equivalent traditions. And yes sometimes with the Germanics its not your fathers given name (Thor ODINson) but the traditional occupation of your family.

Over here in SKOAHTLAND, we used to have a system of heraldry, and before that, governance, in clans, that was only abolished in the 18th century with a history going back centuries. You might be able to find some common British surnames from them. Hell, I myself am actually a descendant of Clan Gunn. "Aut pax aut bellum!", sounds pretty intimidating eh?
