So I'm currently in a cinema waiting for the next movie at an anime film festival (reelanime, if you're curious enough to look it up). Just two films in and having a blast like I do every year at this.
Then I remembered we lack an anime thread here. So, like, what anime and manga do you guys like, and why?
Intense, visceral, noir.
NEO TOKYO: The Running Man
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDYR4lNo2zU">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDYR4lNo2zU</a><!-- m -->
(Full vignette above)
A terrible vision of the future hidden under a layer of cheese and male power fantasy.
FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsJkU2FnXU4">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsJkU2FnXU4</a><!-- m -->
(Full movie above)
The most realistic depiction of mecha in modern day society that mixes the mundane and humorous with cool tech. Also my favorite of any anime.
MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9UtUzjUA5Q">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9UtUzjUA5Q</a><!-- m -->
Like Patlabor, it explores a realistic setting for mecha, but focuses more on the military application than humor of everyday life.
GASARAKI

(Full series on Youtube)
Superior in every way to DBZ if you stop at Season 2. Inferior in every way if you don't.
YU YU HAKUSHO
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rODAlM-Uefg">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rODAlM-Uefg</a><!-- m -->
The best English dub ever. Most hilarious show written; I watched this in China and its boring as hell in its original form.
SHIN CHAN
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iJkWqCkOV8">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iJkWqCkOV8</a><!-- m -->
(Full episodes on Youtube)
A trancendent expression of the most complex Freudian ideas, disguised at as one of the worst anime's ever created.
MD GEIST

Speaking of realistic style Mecha, have you seen Broken Blade?
Hipster post:
I gave up when all the animation studios switched to digital.
I'm not very good at selling things to people. I tend to yell an anime title at them and go JUST FUCKING WATCH IT NOW. I'll try and be coherent. Key word being 'try'.
Mirai Nikki.
I'm a little bit yandere for Yuno. I actually love her. I also find the concept behind the anime pretty damn cool. It's like a surreal Battle Royale.
Angel Beats.
This anime will break your heart and make you cry, but it's SO worth it. It's also really short - only 12 episodes long! - so you really have no excuse not to watch it.
Toradora!
If you're after something that's quite cute and light-hearted, look no further than Toradora. I also dare you not to fall in love with Taiga. Baka!
Death Note.
The first anime I 'properly' got into. I loved the concept and the execution, though in hindsight I'm not sure how I managed to watch the English dub. Misa's voice actress was godawful.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.
Yet another short anime which will tear your heart to pieces, if you let it. It's also arguably one of the prettiest animes I've ever seen. Some of the fight scenes have some truly stunning visuals. (Also, the soundtrack is totally baller).
K-ON!
It's sickeningly sweet and adorable. Perfect for recovering after watching some heart-wrenching anime that makes you want to drown yourself in ice-cream and tears for the foreseeable future.

I have seen everything on that list except Toradora. I will vouch for Madoka Magica (120% must watch that show), Death Note (well, mostly just the first half...) and Angel Beats.
Mirai Nikki was good, but did suffer from some lame writing in places, and I kinda think the manga ended up being a lot better :3
K-ON" is pretty good, but not everyone's cup of tea for sure.
So the movies I saw yesterday were the 3rd Evangelion reboot film (pretty disappointing compared to the first two), RE: Cyborg 009 (terrible, if amusing), The Garden of Words (breathtakingly amazing) and part 1 of Ghost in the Shell: Arise (awesome).
Pretty damn good day, even if two of the movies were letdowns. I'm seeing the two good ones again next sunday, plus A Letter to Momo which I've heard good things about, with some other friends.

Boogiepop Phantom and Baccano! are the only two animes I've seen (except for Americanized ones on Cartoon Network). They're both wicked, I'd recommend them if y' all haven't seen.

DBZ Battle of the Gods is probably the best DBZ movie, FYI.
It makes me want Toriyama to continue the series, which is something I didn't think I would ever say.
Uh oh. Those boys got me all tingly...
I must calm it.

Really? Maybe it's because I couldn't understand half the Japanese dialogue at the time, but I thought it was just entertaining. More of a nostalgia throwback than an actually good standalone movie.
Curious about me and the characters I play? See the
'Staff' page! See also the rosters for my characters
Samus Aran or
Enel if you'd like to see examples of well-formatted rosters. Hope you enjoy the Omniverse!

Welp I'm apparently an anime virgin compared to y'all. Be gentle.
My super ultra absolute favorite so far is still Death Note. Very compelling and well-written, even if there are some moments of 100% pure bullshit.
I'm binging HARD on Hunter x Hunter lately, too (almost out of new episodes q_q). It's... actually a lot like Dragonball if Dragonball were more well-written and less screamey.
Baka 2 Test is fucking awesome. It's incredible. It's hilarious. It's retarded. It's all of these things go watch it also fuck you I don't need grammar when talking about this shit you understand me because I don't and it's getting really hard to follow this sentence along. Hope you read that out loud without taking a breath in between. Because that's how a MAN reads.

Attack on Titan.
It's pretty awesome. TItans (giants) push humanity back to the brink where they survive in a solitary city w/ a few million people. Titans go away for 100 years. Humans are all "man they ain't comin back" and then they come back.
Shit is fucked up. Try not to get attached to main characters. You will be saddened.
