Characters, graphically.
#1
So I got bored at work and decided to settle my own mental debate: which type of media has the most characters sourced from it?

I did some research (more than I should have done on the clock, probably) and compiled everything into a spreadsheet. For the sake of my sanity, I only included players with characters in the Active Roster section. I then graphed the results:

The data here are based on the character's FIRST appearance (Real life chronology, not canon chronology) in their canon's FIRST media form, since a lot of series have been made into games and vice verse. For example, Pokemon is classified as a 'Game' here because that is the first media form it took, even though it is also an anime, manga, film etc. Trying to parse which have been in multiple media forms would have been a nightmare. I tried to lump everything into small enough groups that it still made sense.

Webcomics and comic books are both called 'Comics' and anything not Anime/Manga that is animated is just called 'Cartoons'. 'Games' are typically video games, though Warhammer is also included (this works out pretty well, as there are also Warhammer video games). I put anime and manga together, though by rights you could simply put 'Manga' and get the same graph; I just thought it made more sense. You could also combine Cartoons and Anime/Manga to make it neater, but I feel like you'd be losing 'meaning' in the data.

The 'Originals' section is for those that don't have a universe that they are based in (or, at least didn't list one in their join form); if we added back in Originals based in canon universes, it would be the second largest group, at 19. It would also eliminate the 'Films' group and a good chunk of 'Games'.

SO, conclusions: we apparently like us some games and anime, if that was ever in doubt. I was surprised by how much Games outweighed everything until I started typing it up.

That's all. Lemme know what you guys think.

Novel-character section representative in the house :c00lbert:

I'm fairly surprised at the graphs results, anyhow. There's a lot of characters from video game sources here, yes, but without this I always thought the main over-abundance in characters here lied within the anime/manga genre. And that's not a bad thing at all, of course! But the vast flavour and array of character sources here is what, in my honest opinion, makes this site as fun and exciting as it really is, and makes it such a pleasure to be around on.

I'm also impressed by the amount of OCs we have hanging around, also Tongue just goes to really show many creative minds and thinkers we have on here. You keep doing what you do, you guys!

I went into this thinking that there were way more Anime/Manga, too. Then again, a bunch of characters that I assumed were from anime were actually from a game, so that might contribute. =P

Fascinating stuff, Vincent. Thank you for sharing this with us.

In a sense, it's not really surprising. The people who are most likely to be interested in PbP RPGs in the first place are people who enjoy mediums like video games, manga/anime and comics (though there are exceptions, like Whirda). On top of that, a fair number of characters from those mediums generally lend themselves well to a game-like structure, since they often have special moves and power-ups.

Just curious, did you count Gilgamesh as video game or Novel or anime? Since he is originally from a visual novel and then an anime

Video game. Wikipedia had 'Fate/stay night' as the first installment that he appeared in (as Archer) , listing the game as the basis for the novel.

Haha yeah, your canon was one of the harder ones to tease apart. I got pretty confused when I saw it listed as all of those.

I'm surprised there are so many originals. Third highest category.

OC's are fun to play with but, I'm sure games are better since their designed to be fun.

Anime/Manga will be getting another count once I hit 8000OM. Might take awhile, though...

Actually, no. Jack's film is based on a book. The film one is Trixie, though that one is a little iffy. Her joining post lists the Star Wars universe as her source, and since technically the first installment is Episode IV she falls under a movie. You could technically classify the universe under 'Novels' if you tweak the rules, since there are so many books and stuff. Also from what I understand, Trixie is also semi DBZ-based, so she might be a better fit under purely Original.

I was under the impression that Trixie was an OC...
#19
She's listed as OC, sourced from the Star Wars universe in her join form. In the graph I posted I listed OC characters sourced from a particular universe as coming from that universe. Only those with no listed universe are in the 'Original' category (Carn, Neal etc.). My logic was since we're all RPing as a character and not following a canon storyline, we're all technically OC-esque, really just basing off the canon version, so I had to be a little more 'picky'.

Correct. My Omniverse iteration of Trixie is a custom designed Star Wars character. I did however use the same personality from DBZ Trixie, but that version is directly from Bloodrayne. So the film category strikes true twice, because Bloodrayne was also a movie and a video game by Majseco. For Omniverse, Trixie looks more like Mara Jade Skywalker than Bloodrayne. Mainly because her hair is longer.
