Into the Deeps
#1
When Dick stepped into the gate, he was immediately confronted with a feeling of falling. But it quickly vanished as the scent of seawater barraged his nose, and he lurched from the near-instant transition between the two.
"Ah, come on, ya whelp! Never been through a gate before?" said the man beside him, a look of disdain on his face. "What are ya, a fountain fresh?" Puzzled, Dick looked up from the ground, where he had nearly thrown up. Focusing back on the task at hand, he turned behind him, where the woman was coming in. She strolled in as casually as the man, strolling through simply. Dick immediately got to business, beginning to speak:
"Alright, so where can we get onto the boats?"
"I got my boat docked 'ere, right on Costa. It'll be just a bit, then we'll get on and be heading straight to 'er boat, right?" Dick thought for a moment. Perhaps he should, but he'd need some time to understand this new world. And regardless, looking up he noticed that it was beginning to get dark.
"As much as I'd like to, it's beginning to get dark. We can't risk some pirate ship or something similar taking advantage of the darkness." The woman nearby nodded, but the man got angry, bursting into a near-yell.
"Dammit, I've navigated these waters before at night! They aren't dangerous, not with a captain like me!" Dick sighed.
"Look, if you want me to help, I'll do it tomorrow. If not, I'll allow you to go back again, chasing their boat. But she's not going with you." The man grumbled, walking away toward his boat.
"'A'll be back 'ere tomorrow. Meet me 'ere, or 'a'll be comin' after both of ya." Ignoring his threat, Dick began to walk toward the beautiful city ahead.

Costa, the man had called the island. Thinking to himself, Dick tried to reason more about each gate. This one had led to an island, with an apparently endless sea ahead. Reasonably, it was likely that either each led to a different island, or that no others lead to areas with large bodies of water. However, it was entirely possible that they all led to the same place, or that they all lead to different areas with vast areas of water. So lost in thought, he didn't notice the woman from before was walking just next to him until she spoke up, surprising him.
"Hey, I uh, don't really have a place to stay tonight. Could I stay with you?"
"Yeah, of course. I don't care. First, though, I gotta get some new clothes." He pulled out the top of his kevlar bodysuit, to show what he meant. "Hey so, uh, what would the easiest way to get some money fast be?" The woman let out a chuckle.
"Guess he was right: you are a fountain fresh," she said to herself, before asking simply: "Omni summon you?" Dick thought back to his introduction to the world.
"Yeah, it was Omni. Is there any other way?" The woman ignored his second question.
"Alright, so focus for a minute or so and you can summon stuff, with the Omniliium he told you about. It's like, uh, a superpower, that everyone summoned by Omni gets."
"Okay..." Dick held out his hand and thought about the orb Omni had given him. It suddenly appeared, and Dick thought for a moment about what to shape it into. It would have to be something simple, valuable to everyone so he could exchange it for the native currency. But it should also be relatively small, able to be held in his hands easily. He decided on rubies, small but valuable. He closed his eyes and felt the Omnilium mould into the small gemstones as he thought through the process. He opened his eyes after finished, viewing his product. It would hopefully still be worth something, even here. "Know where I can sell these?" he asked, looking over at the woman.
"Uh... I think there should be a shop that'll take 'em? In the city, I mean. I haven't really, uh, actually been in there much." Dick nodded in response and began walking further into the city.

Howland looked around for a few minutes, taking the entire place in. It seemed mostly to be attractions, though there were shops. Finally, after searching for several minutes, he found a shop claiming to deal in precious gems and metals. As he walked in, a satisfying bell rang and a voice echoed through the shop.
"Comin!" A man came quickly in from the back of the store, and stood behind a counter, leaning on it. "What can I do for ya?"
"How much can I get for these?" Dick placed the rubies onto the counter, and the man's eyes got wide.
"Damn! Those'll be worth a bit!" The man reached down below the counter, fishing out several rainbow-coloured coins and placing them onto the counter, sliding the rubies down and placing them in the back. When Dick reached out and grabbed the coins, he felt that they were quite heavy, clearly with more mass than was apparent.
"Thank you," he said as he walked out. Outside, the woman from before was waiting.
"Why'd you run off like that! I could've taken you here! Probably..."
"I was just trying to get money quickly. You realise how uncomfortable these suits are?" The woman went silent at that remark, so Dick just walked forward, searching again for a shop, this time one selling clothing. Fortunately, he found one much quicker than what he was looking for before, and immediately he went into a changing room with a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. He put them on and grabbed a pair of sunglasses, paying for them with a single rainbow coin before quickly walking out. The woman met him outside, and suddenly a thought came to mind. "You know, I never actually asked your name. What is it?" he said.
"Nicole." The way she spoke it was clear he would get no last name.

Dick walked onward, heading to a nearby hotel with large signage. Soon, he made it inside and put two coins on the counter.
"What type of room will this get me?" A woman behind the counter brought out a scanner, pointing it at the coins. Her jaw fell in shock as a reading appeared.
"Th...this'll get you a full penthouse!"
"A penthouse? I don't need something that grand." But Nicole stepped forward from behind Dick.
"We'll take it." The woman behind the counter, not wanting to deal with them arguing, handed them keys and gestured toward a nearby elevator.
"Insert the key into the slot on the wall of the elevator. That'll take you to the top floor, where your room is." Dick did as she instructed, and was soon moving upward into the penthouse.
"I still don't see why we needed something this big. It's only for a night!" Dick said, aghast from the seemingly needless spending of money.
"Shut up. It's a nice room," Nicole replied. They soon made it into the room, finding themselves in a large room with one huge window, looking out at the beach. To the sides were several doors leading to smaller rooms, and Dick went through one, finding himself in a bedroom. He collapsed into the bed, and got ready for his first rest in this strange world.

Dick woke up and stretched his arms, moving so his legs hung off of his bed. He checked a clock by his bed, seeing it was nearly nine AM. Apparently, he had slept in. He immediately got up, heading off for a shower. After several minutes in a warm mist, he stepped out, wrapping a towel around himself, before focusing, as he had the day before, on summoning. But this time he was summoning clothing. First, a simple t-shirt and jeans plus a jacket to wear when buying materials. And then a replica of his rubber-kevlar suit from his homeworld, but with one alteration: cloth on the inside. Back in his world, it would have been too much of an inconvenience to weave the cloth into the rubber, but here it didn't matter. That, he would carry with him to change into once he began work. Soon, he had summoned all the clothing and put on the shirt and pants, walking back out to the main room of the penthouse. He found Nicole already there, apparently already ready to go.
"Geez man, how long do you sleep? I've been waiting for you for almost three hours!"
"Sorry, it's been a lot of stress since I've gotten here. Still not quite used to the idea that my old world is just... gone." Nicole snorted.
"Well, better get used to it. Nobody's been able to find a way back to their world, so you'll be stuck here for a long time." Dick paused to think for a moment. So that was it. His prior world was gone, and he'd never return. But he'd have to be optimistic, and keep helping this world as a hero. Focusing back on the task at hand, he spoke up.
"So, know where we're gonna get some fishing equipment?"
"There'll probably be a store down by the docks with nets and shit. Don't really know all we need, but we'll figure it out." Dick nodded, heading toward the elevator and beckoning for the woman behind to follow. She complied, and they were soon heading down. Dick walked over to the counter, placing the key for the elevator down so the woman behind could take it.
"Oh! Um, this is good for the next week or so..."
"Just give it to the next person to walk in. They'll deserve it, I'm sure." The woman's eyes went wide, but he ignored her, walking out.

Soon, Dick had made it to a shop selling fishing supplies with Nicole, clutching a handful of Omnilium coins. He walked up to the counter, and asked politely:
"Excuse me, what would be the best thing to buy when starting a fishing vessel?" The woman behind the counter laughed.
"You new ta' this?" Dick stammered, attempting to find a response, but she interrupted with more speech. "Ya' already got a ship?" Nicole nodded.
"The guy described it as uh, a trawler."
"It's big?"
"Yeah."
"Alright then! You'll be wantin' some big nets, right o'er there," she pointed over to a far wall. "Most of 'em are pretty hefty in price, but ya' bought the boat, so you'll be willin', a'm sure. Dick raised up the Omnilium coins and looked at them for a moment. The price probably wouldn't be a problem, giving their value.
"Go find the nets," he said to Nicole, who had still been lingering near the counter. "You're the one who needs them." She mumbled a response under her breath, but then walked over and began looking at the nets. She held each one and tugged, before pulling out the one that felt most strong. Soon, she had come back and placed it on the counter so Dick placed two of the heaviest coins down.
"Oh, you'll probably want a radio too. This is enough though for it." Scanning the Omnilium coins, the cashier nodded. "Yeah, you'll be good." and pushed the net toward Nicole and grabbed a small radio from under the counter.
"Excuse me," Dick asked as Nicole began to walk out with her acquisitions. "Do you have a restroom?"

Dick walked out of the store wearing his suit, meeting up with Nicole.
"Ready to go do some negotiations?"
"Guess so." They walked off back to the meeting place and arrived there within minutes. The man from the day before was waiting, angry.
"Y'er late."
"We got here earlier than the agreed time! What are you talking about?" Nicole burst in.
"Calm down. I apologise that we were late. Nicole, I know what you're about to say, but drop it. It's not worth it." The burly seaman let out a chuckle, leading them forward to his ship. Once they got on, he led them under the deck to a small room with a table and a map in the middle.
"Stay 'ere." So, they sat. For nearly an hour.
"I swear, I'm about ready to bust a hole in this wall..." Nicole said with a groan.
"What was 'at?" The captain suddenly appeared in the doorway. "We're 'ere..." he said with a snarl. Dick and Nicole walked up to the top of the ship, garnering some odd looks from the other people onboard. Nearby was a smaller, but still large, ship, on which several people were situated. Most of them were young, some even children. One had a fireball in his hand, and seemed to be focusing.
"Kev! Stop!" Nicole yelled.
"Nicole? I thought they'd kill you by now!"
"Just wait for a second! This guy's here to help get us out of this situation. He's trying to negotiate!" Nicole jumped into the water, bending the water around her when she smacked down against the surface. She then rapidly accelerated, heading toward the second boat. Dick then, himself, ran with a burst of speed before bursting and hanging onto the second boat before climbing up.
"What the fuck's going on with these freaks..." said someone on the boat behind. But neither of the superhumans heard them as they boarded the other boat. Dick immediately took command, yelling out to the people on board.
"Alright! Where's your prisoner from the other ship?" One kid, the one who had formerly held a fireball, beckoned for Dick to follow him, a slight look of guilt on his face. He led Dick into a small room where the man was sitting, snoring with his head back. "He's not restrained?" Dick asked, confused.
"Naw. We just locked him in here. Brought him food and stuff, I swear!"
"No, no, you're not in trouble for it. I'm actually impressed, surprised you treated him so well."
"Yeah, Emily wouldn't let us tie him up or anything." Dick walked over and shook the man, causing him to wake up quickly.
"What is it?"
"You're coming with me, back to your ship." The man grinned.
"About time!"

Dick settled down into a chair in Nicole's group's ship. Everything had been settled, and the other fishing vessel had left. In exchange for his help in establishing them as a legitimate fishing boat, the group of superhumans had offered to serve as his allies, allowing him to request their aid whenever necessary. He had gladly accepted, and so was resting, preparing for more hero work. Because despite this being a new, strange world, he wasn't ready to give up his values. He was a hero: no matter where he went.
