Without any fanfare or intro screens the video opens to a well-lit room. Taking up one half of the screen’s real-estate is a young woman sitting with her legs crossed on a comfortable looking chair. The lady is young, and has a perkiness that one would associate with a college freshman. Her black hair is pulled back into a tight bun and she is wearing a cream colored jacket. A million dollar smile is painted across her lips. In her thin fingers she hold a long black microphone. Sitting across from her in a similar chair is the leader of The Ashen Blades, Kuzuru. A black hoodie, lined with fur, covered his body. His demeanor was much more relaxed than that of his companion and he carried a sense of almost arrogant confidence.
“Hello Omniverse,” the girl spoke into the microphone, “I am Suzy Salazar and we’re here with the leader of the mercenary group, ‘The Ashen Blades’ to bring you a special news report.”
Kuzuru waved and offered his most sincere smile. A tagline appeared on screen displaying the man’s name.
“So my sources tell me that you and your companions were instrumental to the defeat of Nebula’s forces within The Ashen Steppes,” she said with a pristine smile on her face, “tell me about the battle with the terrorist group.”
“Well Suzy, I just want to start off by saying that while we did most of the heavy lifting, I have to give credit to the few brave primes that came to assist us,” Kuzuru said, “I never did get their names, but if you’re watching thank you for helping me protect my homeland, now the battle itself was quite a violent one, as I’m sure you know the Koopas were delivered a devastating blow and chose to retreat underground against the overwhelming forces of Nebula, I can’t blame them, but it did pitch the battle in favor of Nebula.”
“That must have been a harrowing experience, how did you manage to survive?”
Kuzuru chuckled and responded, “well, fortunately most of my fellow Blades are primes so that gave us an edge against the overwhelming numbers of Nebula, but eventually we were cornered by the leader of Nebula’s forces in that area, a particularly nasty darkloid.”
Images of the Blades as well as three other primes flashed across the screen. They were standing inside Wendy Garrison, surrounded by a massive force of darklings. At the center stood a draconian sorcerer, covered from head to toe in the telltale signs of darkchip abuse. He tore open a portal into Nebula space. He gave them an ultimatum saying that they could stay and be slain or follow him into the portal and live forever. Without another word the darkloid dove into the portal, leaving the primes to their own devices. The video cut back to the reporter and Kuzuru.
“So you followed him?” Suzy asked, paused, and added another jab, “even though he said that your powers would belong to Nebula if you followed?”
Kuzuru shrugged, “we didn’t have much of a choice Ms. Salazar, sure we probably could’ve fought our way through the darklings, but then the proverbial serpent’s head would have been alive and well, I had to make a tough call and figured that following him was the best option for the future of the verse.”
“I see,” she said, “so what happened in Nebula Space?”
“Well we were transported to some kinda shadow realm version of the Steppes, real doom and gloom kind of thing, the portal scattered us across the base of this volcano and we had to make our way to the top,” he said, making motions with his hand to simulate the shape of a volcano, “eventually we persevere and made it to the summit where the Darkloid was waiting for us, the footage from this point out is a bit damaged, probably due to the aberrant nature of Nebula Space itself, but we can play some of the highlights if you don’t mind.”
Suzy Salazar flashed her trademarked grin and responded, “no not at all.”
Video of the prime’s battle with the Darkloid played across the screen. The footage was full of glitchy artifacts and in some places it was hard to decipher exactly what was happening. Still the entire battle was condensed down to a few minutes of the best clips, culminating with the Darkloid transforming into a vicious dragon. As the primes fought the beast Kuzuru, clad with striking purple wings, flew high above the battlefield. His entire body crackled with energy and in one fell swoop he spiraled straight into the creature’s gullet. An explosion rocked inside the creature’s stomach and it stumbled backwards. The video cuts back to Suzy and Kuzuru.
“Wow, so you sacrificed yourself to defeat the Darkloid?” Suzy asked, practically on the edge of her seat.
Kuzuru laughed, “ah yeah, you see the thing was on the backfoot already, but we were so beat down and wore out from the constant fighting that I knew if I didn’t act some of us weren’t going to be coming back home, it was a bit drastic, but I figured it was my duty to protect my companions so I was more than willing to trade my life for the future of the verse.”
“How noble of you,” Suzy commented.
“Yeah, well, I don’t like to take all the credit, The Ashen Blades are a team and I’m proud of them,” Kuzuru said, “as long as we’re around The Steppes are safe from Nebula and anyone else that seeks to threaten this verse.”
Suzy nodded and turned to the camera, “well I’m sure the Omniverse as a whole thanks you and your fellow mercenaries for their selfless acts, but unfortunately we’re out of time for today, thank you for having me Kuzuru.”
“Thanks for taking the time to get our side of the story,” he said, paused, and added, “and thanks for letting us put this interview up on our channel.”
The video faded to black and in its place a sigil appeared for several seconds as the video came to a close.
