The next morning...
Eric awoke to streams of sunlight glistening through the forest roof. The birds sang throughout the woods, especially mourning doves with their familiar tunes. The leaves swayed gently in the breeze, still as vibrant and colorful as when he and his companion had first arrived. A few leaves covered the grass, but for the most part the forest floor was clear. Indeed, everything was the same as it was before, just as if there really had never been a massive brawl between two men and a rock golem the night prior. Trees bent from its entrance leaned slightly, but otherwise everything was normal.
As the young mage sat upright and yawned, he noticed that the camp had been disassembled. Jams was standing beside him, smiling as he slung an acorn-filled sleeping bag over his shoulder. "You ready to go?" he asked.
"Yes," Eric yawned, "we should deliver these acorns to Melody post haste."
"Alright then! Let's head out!" Jams' grin grew a little. "Good thing you aren't still mad at me."
"What was that?"
"Oh, sorry, talking to myself."
...
The duo reached the Scorched Grove sooner than they had expected. As they walked out into the charred plains, they saw a spot of grey to their left. There she was, the noble enchantress herself, and only a few dekameters away at that. It seems she had built a small tent for herself in the passing day.
"HEEEEEY!" Jams yelled from the distance.
It sounded like Melody yelled back, but Jams had trouble understanding what she said.
"SORRY, BUT IT'S NOT VERY NICE TO ASK SOMEONE IF THEY'RE BRIGHTER OR NOT."
She yelled again, but while it sounded similar he heard it as "do you have to wisen it."
"HOLD ON, WE'LL BE RIGHT THERE."
As the two got closer, Melody started to scold the lad. "I said 'do you have an item yet,' you ninny. Mayhaps you aught to turn down your music every once in a while, then you would not go so deaf."
"oh..." Jams muttered.
"We have obtained acorns in spades."
"For Omni's sake, it took you an entire day to find even a single acorn? What kept you both?"
"Nothing much. Seasonal confusion, shaking trees, fighting rock monsters..."
"Well I guess it would have helped to tell you that acorns normally are not ready to fall this time of year. Though I do appreciate the effort you both put into obtaining this material (even though you butchered it the first time)." Melody extended her hand out to the boys. "Just hand me your acorns and I'll see to your reward."
The two adventurers grinned. "You may be pleased to discover," Eric announced, grabbing the sleeping bag from Jams' shoulder, "that we have actually obtained what you wished for."
The young mage then opened up the top of the bag and showed off the acorns to a delighted sorceress.
"This is quite nice, in fact this is a bit more than I would have expected you both to get when I first met you! Lads, I thank you both for your errand." Melody took the sleeping bag and entered her tent. "Just a moment, let me go put these away someplace safe."
The two adventurers looked at each other, both feeling a sense of accomplishment. While they had no idea what may lay ahead for either of them, for the first time they both truly felt like they had a place in this world.
