The goblin trembled, shaking its club at Samus. It wore a look somewhere between fear and indignation, and at only two feet tall the metal woman towered over it. Her arm cannon was blazing with an orange glow, the barrel pointed directly at her small, green adversary.
“Stop.” She said. “Surrender.”
“Gnargl!” replied the goblin, with another trembling shake of its club. Its fallen brethren were all around it, covered in purple blood.
Samus analysed the situation. This goblin was a secondary – mortal. But he’d tried to kidnap another secondary – the child of one of the villagers. To eat. To eat was one thing, but these goblins had a particular taste for sapient flesh, for some reason. Killing them was the correct path.
Nonetheless, this goblin was at Samus’s mercy. So she said again. “Surrender.”
The goblin threw the club at Samus and dived for her leg. It barely moved before it was a smudge on the floor.
The villagers clapped and cheered. Samus turned, raised her arm cannon in acknowledgement that all was safe. When she’d come to the village they’d been as fearful of her as the goblins. Most had run, and some had even tried to attack her. Now they cheered.
Samus walked to her tri-wheeler and mounted it. She’d tried fitting in by summoning a large reptilian mount – a geshilin – when she’d first arrived to Camelot, but it hadn’t worked out. Somewhere out there it was probably still running around, eating wolves and rabbits with its hyperactive metabolism. Or else the orcs and goblins had taken it to make into stew. Either way, she hadn’t heard of any villages being attacked by a large hyperactive lizard, so it was fine.
It had been only a few days since her battle against the Rathalos and her humiliating defeat at the hands of Cindy, the monster hunter. It had been a very long time since Samus had been bested by anyone, and it stung. She hadn’t realised it, but the years of being known as the best bounty hunter in the galaxy had swollen her pride. It had occurred to her that perhaps she’d gotten cocky, but that wasn’t why. She’d gotten too trusting, that was why. She’d allowed the brief camaraderie of a battle fought together make her let her guard down.
It reminded her of when she’d fought the final war against Dark Samus. Briefly it had been fun, to work with other hunters. But how long had it taken before their own weakness had betrayed them, led them to fall down the path of corruption and turn on her? There was only one person she could ever truly trust, and that was herself.
Not even Adam can ever be truly trusted. She thought.
She thought of the kid and felt a bit sorry. Proto Man. He had potential. He’d saved her life. She definitely owed him one.
These thoughts rolled around in Samus’s mind as she rumbled towards the Gate. It took hours before the standing stones that signalled its presence could be seen. She closed in, stepped off her bike and desummoned it to its component Omnilium.
Later, Camelot, she thought, and stepped through.
