Azathoth
#1
Location and Role:
Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God, is an ancient force of chaos older than the universe, existing in a strange state of being everywhere and yet nowhere to be found. This ancient primeval force dwells exclusively in the Astral Realm, though it influences other Zones through the wild and horrible dreams it can effect on their denizens. This unspeakable creature holds no true station, and is often not even recognized as a real force within the Omniverse, but those who have been touched by its impossible madness have irrefutable proof to the contrary.

Cults and organizations have formed to worship or to attempt to comprehend this being, these groups being often plagued by insanity and mass murders or suicides. It is difficult to say whether or not the being even has foul motives, or if it is simply horrible through its unfathomable movements.

Often, unwary dreamers are drawn to this strange creature through contact with a Black Man who leads them through the inscrutable layers of dream and mind to a place where Azathoth is said to dwell, were the garish sound of monotonous piping echoes and writhing, flopping, amorphous creatures dance. It is said that this Black Man will attempt to conscript these wayward dreamers into a bond with Azathoth by having them sign a book with their own blood. What being bound to this horrible creature actually means is yet to be understood but many who claim horrible magical power claim to be associated with it.

Appearance:
Azathoth as well as the Black Man can appear in many ways, depending on the dreamer. As creatures that exist solely within dream, and are perhaps manifestations of those dreams, what they look like highly depends on who is looking upon them.

No matter what incarnation Azathoth takes, it is most often accompanied by the monotonous sound of thin flutes, mindlessly piping without rhythm. Often Azathoth is impossibly large, created of the stars and sky that floats above each of the verses, each glimmering light another eye that stares down upon the dreamer, other times it is almost incalculably small, a strange speck of light or a hole of darkness far off on the horizon. Some have described it as an undulating mound of crinkling flesh or ooze, thousands of malformed orifices and flopping tentacles composing a sea of horror. Others still say it consists of a bivalvular shell supported on many pairs of flexible legs with several jointed cylinders, tipped with polypous appendages; and in the darkness inside the shell, a horrible, bestial, mouthless face, with deep-sunk eyes and covered with glistening black hair. Your character may see something else entirely.

The Black Man is most frequently describes as a tall, muscular or slender man, with skin thickly coated in black oil, or dark black in color. Sometimes the Black Man appears as an Egyptian Pharaoh, though very tall and strangely thin.
