Colosseum - Round 1, Group A - Desco vs Mami Tomoe
#1
Desco stood before an unfurled Kingdom flag. Given her size, the rolling battlefield seemed immense, but far on the other side, she saw a familiar face. Mami Tomoe, the magical girl from Dante's Abyss, glanced at the tattered flag behind her and then stared up into the sea of people. Up above them, a packed crowd cheered, waiting for the signal that would commence the 'festivities.'

Someone gestured for silence, and just like that, there wasn't a sound in the building as Victor von Magnus walked onto the small platform near the center of the massive structure. With a smile, he picked up the padded hammer and smashed it into the gong, signalling the fights to commence.

The young final boss was led into the area and to her designated portion of the arena. Her eyes though were focused on the crowd. Desco felt a little nervous as she walked, the audience made this a public display and she was not accustomed to being on stage. She has had no problems before, but in Dante's Abyss people weren't standing or sitting around and so keenly present. Before that, Big Sis's presence as she faced the Demon Senate was of immeasurable comfort. The young demon shook a little as she stepped past the weapons set up for use on her end of the arena, which she was told earlier was going to be protected by an invisible cube. However, now that she was here, she considered the fight that was about to begin and she shunted out the audience or the noise they made.

It was difficult to see across the battlefield with the various obstacles present. Desco stood on her tail which slithered out from her dress and propped her up on the dusty dirt, increasing her height while Yogsothoth materialized with his many yellow eyes and tentacles. Yogsothoth floated silently behind her in battle ready mode with his tentacles waving back and forth. Her opponent for this first round was the magical girl she had spotted before Dante's Abyss and subsequently inside the survival dimension attacking her with Luffy and Guu. The fight was short lived as she had escaped their grasp. The young demon bore no ill will towards her, Desco was rather curious about her magical girl powers. As a magical girl, Mami was also a Hero and she could defeat a Final Boss.

The gong sounded throughout the arena. It was time to start the fight! Yogsothoth stretched back with two tentacles and grabbed a heavy dull gray tower shield shield and what would be a sharp two handed steel sword for a human. Since they provided weaponry, Desco thought it was only appropriate to use the weaponry. Then she floated up above ground. Her sword that she was now holding struck the ceiling on this fight, forcing her to look at it a moment before she floated down to compensate for it. Two of Yogsothoth's side tentacles stretched out to test the sides of this area as well. With her centered on the area and twenty foot reach, her bodies width was the reason she could touch the sides, the tentacles bouncing lightly off as they did.

Then a bang, and her medieval shield pushed back as the magical girl's bullet, which she had not paid enough attention to, ricocheted into the ground. It seemed innocent enough, but the bullet caused severe damage where it had struck leaving a tear as it had traveled passing by. The shield was not a very useful defense, and likely her sword was not that useful either so she discarded both, the two falling onto the dirt with dull thuds. Mami was hiding behind a barrier again, perhaps taking her time in evaluating the final boss's actions. Without a visual contact Desco could not well aim her magic, so she floated forward slowly across the arena. Desco had her own blade she could summon, but holding the sword made it harder to throw fireballs.

Suddenly Mami appeared again, jumping from her hiding place and, in mid air, pulling out Muskets from her sleeves, letting them fall out and into both hands with fingers on the trigger. The weapons were some kind of a silver metal, perhaps steel, with an ornate series of curved golden metal lines adorning the gun and finally a wooden stock. Yogsothoth's tentacles automatically stretched out by instinct on the oncoming threat and covering the line of sight with much of Desco's body while she held up one hand. "Fire!" A magical circle appeared under Desco as Mami pulled the trigger and the hammers fell on her muskets. The spark set off the ribbons in the form of bullets inside. The bullets struck Yogsothoth's Tentacles leaving markets, while a moment later a spark appeared under Mami and the magical circle dissipated. Sensing the danger of fire about to strike her underneath, there was little she could do in mid jump but the fire which surged up only touched the back of her legs as she fell to the ground, Desco's aim not taking into account Mami's momentum. It burned, but only like a brief touch to a hot pan.

As Mami landed, her legs trembled as a sizzling sensation covered the backs of her thighs. She let out a faint ow before returning her attention to her opponent.

"I've been burned worse," Mami said with a smile, "But the effort's there."

From a first glance, she wasn't entirely sure how to deal with her, so playing defensive seemed like a decent idea, though clearly she should have thought otherwise. From closer observation, the... Creature, perhaps, seemed hardly different from a Familiar, with a more peculiar, petite and feminine look. Perhaps handling her like one would be wise.

With those tentacles of hers, she would have a bit of range, and if they could take enough hits, they could act as defense against her muskets. That would take away her range advantage, which was just about all she seemed to have in this situation. She had Tiro, but even Tiro in this state likely wouldn't be powerful enough to land a meaningful shot, not to mention that she hadn't reloaded it since her last fight, which meant she would need to reload in battle. That would be difficult, to say the least, especially against an opponent she knew nothing about.

So she was at an impasse. She couldn't fight offensively because she might risk too much, and she couldn't fight defensively because the last few seconds had proven that wouldn't work. Perhaps if she used her ribbons, she could restrain her target, but that wouldn't win the battle for her.

But maybe giving it a bit of risk was what she had to do. "Back in the Abyss, I had a plastic utensil," chimed Mami, "But out here I have these."

Quote:Mami used Multiple Unnamed Muskets. This is pretty much all I'll be using for the entire fight, so strap in - The diversity just might be too exciting. /sarcasm

The Magical Girl summoned as many muskets as she could manage without struggling, which meant six on either side, then she jumped and summoned Tiro. If her one-girl firing squad wasn't enough, she could try faking her opponent out with an unloaded Tiro in the hopes that she would think it would fire. If that did happen, like she hoped, twelve musket shots would be enough to at least make a dent. But what would be next?

As she pointed with an extended arm at the creature before her, a smirk spread across the Magical Girl's face - A smirk that screamed I'm bluffing so loud that it was all she could think. Whether it was only her that saw that or not didn't matter, because things seemed to be going exactly as planned. A half-dozen bullets traveled faster than Mami could see at her target, and the mass of tentacles that defended her seemed thickest in front of where Tiro would have fired, making it that much easier to pierce her defenses and--

...Nothing? Her target seemed unfazed. The barrels of Mami's muskets smoked and so did the point of impact from her rounds, but not a single one seemed to have made any real difference. Her target emerged from the cocoon-like state she had been in with all her tentacles wrapped around her except one that held her off the ground.

Mami blinked. How had she not seen it? That was the weakness! That was where she had to focus her fire! Taking away mobility would take away a number of possible options, though admittedly she seemed to be using none of those possible options. However, doing that would mean her opponent wouldn't even be able to stand, which would be crippling for the rest of the battle.

But before Mami could make her next move, her opponent had beaten her to the punch.

From her own perspective, Desco floated down to the ground again, keeping Mami in her sights. However Mami suddenly brought out a much larger weapon plus copies of the ones she used earlier and instantly Desco protected herself. In those moments that Desco shielded herself from the expected cannon shot from the large weapon Mami summoned, Desco considered whether or not to activate her more potent Sphere Defense. Imbuing Yogsothoth with defensive magic could negate the potentially dangerous weapon and the sphere defense was much stronger than this more ring-like formation. She did not expect what happened next, the same bullets that she had felt earlier only more of them struck the her tentacles, as she had formed a ring of overlapped tentacles to withstand the weapon by instinct her tentacles blocked most of her forward version and she couldn't see that Mami had moved and used only her muskets instead of firing Tiro.

Desco floated up again as Mami considered her opponent, tail flowing with the wind. Mami may not realize it as a result of Desco's recent gift from her father allowing her to more easily deal with wounds, but her muskets were taking their toll. She had not yet drawn blood but Desco was forced to harden her skin to prevent it. Those spots were still tender and another bullet to the same spots would break through, hard skin or not. She proceed to float down to a somewhat taller barrier a few feet closer to Mami for a better vantage point. Her hanging tail started to settle on the stone barricade, but as she put weight onto it she knocked loose a stone and slipped, falling backwards. As she caught herself in mid-air with her levitation the stone fell and split in two as it struck the dirt. Desco righted herself and cautiously tested a different stone and rested herself on that.

The young final boss made a threatening move, holding out her hand once again in typical fashion to cast another spell, but as Mami's eyes grew wider and she prepared to react Desco's eyes connected to Mami's. Desco smiled, "You are the Magical Girl Heroine that Desco expected!" Then her comment about the plastic spoon hit and Desco remembered the entire encounter in a flash."She is sorry that you didn't get a weapon last time and Desco's friends helped. That wasn't very final boss-like." From one emotion to the next, Desco showed genuine remorse in her voice and her head hung down a little. She didn't like to be a bully, even if it was for survival and demonic. "But we have a real fight now so don't hold back!" As Mami was implicitly a hero Desco didn't mind so much the idea of her winning, heroes are meant to defeat final bosses. But that wasn't going to be today!

Desco's eyes glowed pink with star energy. Mami waited to see what would happen, so she continued and shot two thin pink beams at an angle away from where her eyes were looking and striking the side of the arena. Mami looked confused for a moment, instinct telling her that she needed to move but for some reason it was too late already? The beam quickly sweeped the field, catching Mami and ending again on the magical wall on the other side as it disappeared. This action caused star energy to build up around Mami's body. As she started to glow from it, Desco wasted no time on holding up her hands above her and start to summon a fireball, the magical fire flowing around in circles as it grew quickly to a 4 foot diameter. The star magic detonated, destructive energy tearing at her body from top to bottom. "Catch this!" Desco brought her hands down forward in a throwing motion, then the fireball launched at Mami.

Declining the offer and thinking quickly, the magical girl jumped forward into a ground sliding motion using the fireball as cover to reach the trench ahead of her and drop in. Desco just watched as her fireball threw up a cloud of dust that quickly settled with nothing showing but dirt. She was confused, did she incinerate Mami so easily? Desco started to glance about the arena. No ashes were left behind so she must have dodged the One-shot Fireball. "Heeeeey, where did you go?" Desco lifted off again into the air for a better view.

This was the feeling of a true battle.

It was an odd feeling, yes, a feeling unlike any other. Hunting a Witch was just like what she had done with Harry, whether he was or wasn't a Witch, and it didn't feel much like a new experience, but this... This was different. She didn't feel sick or empty or anything like she had been feeling before the fight had begun. She now felt nothing; Everything was thought and calculated rather than being processed emotionally. There was no time for that, and that was perhaps the charm of being on a battlefield. It would be a charm that would last so long as she didn't die.

In her chest-high trench she summoned about eight muskets, which had their stocks pressed into the dirt and their barrels leaning just over the edge. With her opponent (Who so kindly called herself by name) in the air, it seemed she might be an easier target minus the possibility of being more easily on the move. Flight wasn't something that baffled the Magical Girl, but it certainly wasn't something she was used to seeing performed by humanoids. She couldn't apply her experience with flying Witches and hope it was correct, as it seemed quite clear at this point Desco was not a Witch.

As grabbed her first musket and took aim at the now-hovering Desco, she felt almost like she was willing to stop fighting. Yes, she had been absolutely ruined in battle against her previously, but the circumstances were different, and she seemed to genuinely feel bad for what she had done. When it came to fighting competitions to the death, that sort of thing didn't seem like it would be too common, so she had to give her credit for that. Being up against something that was relatively human was another inhibitor; Fighting against something that actually seemed to have morals and, to an extent, feelings was something that made her more questioning of her actions than she would normally like to be.

...But at the same time, she was told not to hold back, and the people running the tournament likely wouldn't take kindly to Mami just giving up, not to mention she herself wouldn't like to just give up when things were getting serious. Desco lined up with the sights on Mami's musket and, in response, the girl swiftly pulled her finger towards the musket's trigger. The sound of the hammer coming down and the bullet flying filled the air and caught Desco's attention, though a tentacle blocked the shot. Mami didn't take the time to see if it was working, and instead she grabbed for her next musket. She aimed another shot as closely to where she guessed her last shot had landed, then another, then another, discarding muskets as she fired each one's lone round.

Quote:Mami used Multiple Unnamed Muskets. Again. Yaaaaaaaaaaaay.

With a snap the muskets turned into ribbons, and with a leap Mami was over the top. She landed on the ground, removed her hat and swung it across the ground before her, keeping her eyes trained on Desco, who now actually seemed affected by the Magical Girl's efforts. In the ground in front of her was a number of muskets with their barrels an inch into the ground, which she drew one by one and fired at her aerial target, continuing to discard muskets after each shot. Being called a heroine seemed nice enough, but at a time like this, she didn't feel much like one with what she was doing. While Desco seemed strong enough, she felt the fight was unfair in some way, in a way that gave her an advantage.

The bright muzzle flash of one of her muskets made Mami's focused golden eyes flash reddish-orange as if they were on fire. Even if it didn't feel right, she would keep going and she would win. Her cause wasn't noble - In fact, she had no true cause - But she would win regardless.

With no muskets left prepared for firing, she flipped backwards, summoned a musket in each hand and offered a smirk. "It feels like we aren't getting anywhere. Let's see whether or not you change that."

Desco continued to take multiple strikes from the muskets. The blasts were making their marks now, as bullets flew past her attempts to block and into her humanoid body. There wasn't much she could do to stop those hits from coming in, Desco had no speed. But she didn't want to. A final boss first takes her opponents attacks in a dignified manner! So Desco kept her composure and held out a hand and a pink magical circle appeared beneath her feet. "Star!" Mami jumped as her instincts told her too, and the three star blasts that tore across the light blue ring they'd formed on hitting nothing but the air and the circle under Desco disappearing. But Desco wasn't done yet. Even as she winced as Mami shot with the two muskets hitting Yogsothoth's front and summoning two more, Desco continued to hold out her hand and this time it was a green magical circle under her. "Wind!"

This time Desco was ready for Mami's movements, in mid-air there was no changing direction for the flightless magical girl. So she fell right into a green tornado of wind energy."Desco got you this time! Ice!" A blue magical circle under Desco, and as Mami fell down with cuts all over from the wind blast, ice magic formed above her and covered her body. While it was malleable, not restricting movement, it was ice cold and painful to the touch. The ice shattered itself after a moment, and Mami hit the ground. But that was enough for the moment, it was Mami's turn to attack so Desco waited for her to get up.

Mami breathed heavily, as suddenly she had been injured pretty good. Desco wasn't looking too well either, as she was full of marks and bleeding from the shots she had taken. But while Desco seemed unfazed by that, Mami felt every bit of it. What was that little girl made of? She couldn't let this continue. Mami started to run. The final boss had gotten used to her jumping and knew where to aim, but if Mami stuck to the ground for now she could react. Mami started to summon muskets out of her sleeves, firing one after another at the floating girl. Desco's tentacles tried to block the attacks with intermittent success, but more importantly she casted more spells at Mami. "Fire! Ice! Wind! Star!" In order a red, blue, red, then pink circle appeared under Desco one after another. But as the fire blast formed, Mami jumped forward to avoid it. Only a little ice covered the back of her head as she rolled forward, and the tornado missed completely as she sprang up and forward. The star blasts missed as she ran through the gap between two of them.

Mami struck back with more muskets, continuing to run along the ground around the Final Boss. This was getting nowhere for Desco and repeated spell casting was tiring. But Mami's shoot and run tactic, she needed to turn back along the edge of the arena. An obstacle blocked her path in the other direction, but following the wall brought her closer to Desco. As summoned another two muskets, suddenly Yogsothoth's top two tentacles charged out and opened up revealing the red void inside to Mami. The magical girl skid to a stop and jumped back, avoiding the snaps of the two tentacles, which after a moment tried again but Mami fell back out of range and landed on the obstacle she'd avoided earlier. That was close for her! If she had gotten a little farther, Desco's tentacles might have gotten a few tries in to bite her.

This was fun for Desco! She'd never been in such an active one on one fight. Most of her life before Big Sis had been training fights against daddy's armored personnel and the rest after she was unsealed in Hades had been spent alongside Big Sis. Even here, she had fought alongside Guu in her travels. But it was time, time to deal the final blow to the heroine! "Are you ready Hero? Prepare yourself, for you are about to see your end!" Yogsothoth's tentacles snapped back, Mami watching carefully from the top of that block."Let's see it then!" Desco's tentacles reared back, and in one the power of fire and wind started to gather in the end while the other had ice and wind gather.

...That couldn't be good. For Mami, at least.

As Desco seemed to be charging up... Something or other that made the sky light up in streamers, Mami braced herself. She dug her heels into the ground and bit her lip - At least she had a lights show to watch while she prepared for her opponent's next move. A few possibilities came to mind when she thought of how to handle the attack that would soon arrive, though she felt an odd sort of power behind this move, something that wasn't behind any of Desco's previous attacks. Mami's Soul Gem radiated almost warmly in response, though its glow remained purplish in colour, giving the Magical Girl an uneasy feeling.

She quickly surveyed the area for something, anything that she could use as cover. Mami's eyes landed, after a moment, on a beaten and dented shield. It was the one Desco had used not long ago with one of those tentacles of hers, in which she saw indents from bullet-holes, filled now with bullets that had unraveled into little ribbons. It likely wouldn't protect her very well, but it would be better than nothing. Mami extended her right arm outwards and from it flew one of her ribbons, which wrapped around the grip beneath the shield.

As it flew back, it occurred to the girl that she had three main possible uses for her left arm: She could either create a vortex with her ribbons directed at Desco, which she could hope would weaken her attack, she could start firing off muskets to try and stop the oncoming attack or at least get some damage in before she made her move or she could two-hand her shield and hope for the best. Her first thought was that it would be wise to try preventing whatever Desco was planning on doing rather than simply playing damage control, but whatever she was doing, it didn't seem like anything Mami was capable of was going to stop her. Seeing as the shield she was using didn't look that stable, either, she wasn't exactly confident it would hold for long against whatever Desco's light show was building up to. If what she was doing looked this cool - All glowing tentacles and wind blowing all over the place - It had to build up to something.

So naturally Mami decided she would try fighting off the attack with her ribbons. Hopefully it wouldn't go too badly.

Mami clutched the shield to her chest with her right hand and extended her left arm out. From her left sleeve came a single ribbon, which quickly covered half the distance between the two girls and abruptly stopped. From there the ribbon rose from the ground so it was level with Mami's arm, then it began to spin, creating a half-sphere with Mami inside. Wind and dust kicked up in the Colosseum, blowing Mami's hair around and pushing hard against her arms and legs and even occasionally threatening to blow her shield away.

It was then that a pair of blue and red cones pierced the air in front of Mami, pushing hard against her half-sphere of spinning ribbon. She suddenly felt a powerful chilling and burning sensation push against her blanket. It was powerful to the point that it felt like it would smother her, though she just shuddered against it, grit her teeth and pushed her boots harder into the ground. Her defense didn't last long - Her ribbon tore in after about three seconds of pressure, after which the winds carried a blast of heat and cold that felt like they were flying through the Magical Girl. Then, as if she were weightless, she felt herself picked up by the wind and thrown backwards. She made contact with the ground a fair distance from where she had been standing.

After a moment's rest on the ground, the Magical Girl pulled herself together and up onto her feet. "That looked cool enough, but it wasn't enough to take me down," she said, still working on catching her breath. "Do you have anything else for me?"
