Hand Jank
#1
So I never really explained this to everyone publicly so I figured I would just explain it here rather than saying it in the chat box over and over.

About four months ago I woke up and my hand was all swollen up. Doctor says it's RSI caused by my job. State of things is that after a few minutes of typing or other similar activity my hand starts to ache and it can persist for days once it starts. If I continue to use it past this point it can start to swell up, but I'm generally not that stupid. It's a fucking jank. I can physically do stuff if I really want to? But it will stop my hand from getting better. So it's a psychological test from me to be able to resist playing video games, or browsing Reddit, or doing anything that requires any amount of clicking.

Most of the time now I use this voice recognition software to type all of my posts. It's what I'm using right now. I can even use it to navigate the Internet, though when I get lazy or frustrated I just use my hand to click stuff. That's the trap. It's aching right now and it pisses me off.

It took about three months before I was able to see a physiotherapist. I saw one interim physiotherapist and now I've just seen a proper one who's going to refer me to the physio in a place where I am now living (I had to move house about two weeks before writing this post, which did not help matters). They've given me a bunch of good ideas like using a tennis ball between my back and the wall to massage it, using a hot water bottle to release the muscles et cetera. It hasn't significantly improved yet but I'm hopeful that it will do.

I've been off work on this time so I'm still technically employed by my previous employer, getting sick pay by the government. The time limit for this is six-seven months before I would have to take more drastic measures. In the meantime I'm looking for new jobs that I'll be able to do with my voice recognition software from home. All the donations I've received in the past few months and are growing member base about three let me to believe that the Omniverse becoming my actual full-time job could be a real possibility in the near future. However there's still much more work to be done before that dream can intersect with reality.

When this started I never expected it to last longer than a few weeks at most. Hence my lack of an explanation. I figured, rest it off and get back on the horse. That hasn't happened. So this is my thing that I can point to in case people wonder why I'm using this janked up voice recognition software Tongue

Voice software isn't working so I'll keep this quick. Coming down to the line now. My money will stop flowing on the 16th of May. Seeing a job specialist for my particular concerns on friday. Hope it'll help. I may be able to go back and do a few shifts a week at my old job. Still ... unsure if I could do it one-handed. Either way something has to give soon.

My physio assures me that if I continue with the exercises I WILL recover, maybe even within a few months. Let's hope so. It is starting to improve.

Yahooo! Great to hear the news. Refrain from "hand janking," :hee: it'll only make things worse.

That's fantastic news, Greg! I hope you recover soon and I look forward to seeing you around here more often once you do recover. Just don't rush it.

Never posted this here but yeah, I've seen substantial improvements in the last few weeks to the point where I've been able to play games again Big Grin been taking a lot of ibuprofen to take the swelling down and that helps, along with frequent breaks from whatever I'm doing and constant stretching as well. Trying not to give into my temptations and overdo it now that I'm able to play games again >_>

Typing still seems to bring in my symptoms quicker so I'm still using my voice recognition software for stuff like this which is fine, it's kind of useful now that I've trained it up though it can still be annoying sometimes.

Last night I literally had the most realistic "nightmare" ever where I kept waking up in the middle of the night and my arm was really stiff and my hand wouldn't close properly and I kept stretching. Now that I've woken up I'm pretty sure that was just an anxiety dream from playing too much Dark Souls yesterday? XD

I never noticed this thread/problem before, and I feel like a real ass for that

But anyway, it's grand news to hear that it's getting better! Hopefully everything will be back to normal soon!

Hand injuries are the worse. I have a few from four years ago while I was in basic that are STILL giving me trouble.

I wish you a quick recovery with no lasting effects.

Voice software seems to not be working atm. A pain. Might be my mic. Gonna try and get it fixed.

Hopefully whatever the issues is a quick and cheap fix.
