Kairi
#1
Character name:
Kairi

Character source:
Kingdom Hearts

Character history:
A long time ago, well, maybe not so long ago, as, this (the omniverse), is not exactly the beginning, or, even the end, worlds were linked; their hearts and the souls of their subsequent inhabitants, open to one another, and – for the most part – protected. Because, they were guarded, protected by just masters that held keys in their hands. It is said that these (the keys) were bladed and were summoned by will of the user alone. Reality saw itself to be cruel however, for their greatest strength, was also their greatest curse.

The pathways between worlds were open to them, and, there very hearts exposed to the dangers of corruption, and, of course manipulation. It is partially their very existence to blame for darkness that soon enveloped, yet, not entirely so. The failure of those that were to stand as guardians, highlights the spreading of beings of sheer corrupt intent: the Unversed. Intent itself being the source of what makes a human a human . . . emotion, specifically, negative emotion of a very particular boy. But, this is not his story, so, I must begin slightly after.

There were worlds of light, just as there were worlds in the dark, Radiant Garden was of the former, and, would be so for the first several years of Kairi’s life. For that time, she lived in a castle with her grandmother, and, it was not until she was four did the illusion of sanctuary faded. The concept of home, could not save her from the unversed that chased her that day. Instead, Aqua one master of the keyblades did. Granted she was only a master in the little girl’s eyes, as, by the standards of their order, Aqua was really only an apprentice. At any rate, fate, had more of a role to play that day than simple rescue.

Shortly before the arrival of King Mickey, Kairi touched the keyblade that Aqua carried, and, initiated a rite that would be later known as Inheritance. This would in turn pass on the ability to wield it much like the keyblade masters did themselves. Initially unaware of this, the knowledge that might have otherwise made her special, faded, and not just in one way. A year later, darkness enveloped all of what Radiant Garden is, and, was. It scattered all those souls that lived their across the stars, to different worlds, realms and for some, into non-existence towards the folds of reality itself where new planes of reality breed. Yet it sent her to Destiny Islands.

Aptly named for so many destinies were created there, and, dealt a twisted hand by fate. It is where the Unversed were first formed, at least, those that would become the enemy of the last remaining keyblade masters. A civil strife between them would divide them, and, utterly conquer them as well, while, Kairi lost all of her memories of that previous life. There was just the island, and, her friends on it: Sora and Riku. They grew up together laughing, playing, with her spurning the two on. After all, they had a rivalry that she did not quite understand, for her attention. Later she understood it, but, that was so long after it all when time seemed to blend together with the darkness that came to the Islands during her fourteenth year.

It came again; a darkness . . . in the form of the heartless. Ansem, a seeker of sorts sought to destroy all worlds, rather, morph them in his image with the light being eliminated. In a way, he was somewhat of a blissful fool as the dark can only truly exist if there is a light. Two sides of the same coin appeared on that day.

Sora stood for the light, and, Riku became corrupted by the dark. Sora went to save him and Kairi only has vague memories of the rest.
Time is fickle that way. It holds a place as memory, moving pictures of images that are familiar, but, as soon as any semblance of it becomes concrete it slips through your grasp; it seems to speed up, and, slow down, and, sometimes not exist at all. Much of her time spent, became like that. She faded in and out of consciousness only partially aware that she had been taken to, away from Destiny Islands. Then, there was something else, something very important, but, each time she tried to think of it, upon it, or, even on it, it slipped through her mental grasp.

Hostage. The thought came and went whisk like a flame in the breeze. Princess, pure of heart, a key to another realm of infinite power. Thereafter, confusion, it would all fade and she would hear Sora sometimes see him, but, he would be gone after. Finally though, there came a time when ‘others’ (those like she), were gathered and everything was clear. Kingdom Hearts, represented all the power that those whom would misuse and abuse it desired. And, she like them around her could open the way, because, she existed only in the light, and, like the other Princesses’ of the Heart, could not be corrupted. Together there could open that doorway that should have never been.

Sora came. She saw him and saved him as he saved her. He had become heartless and with a touch she restored him to the light because she had promised to protect him. Memories began to slip again when they were separated, as, he had feared for her safety, she was brought back to the hub of all worlds: Traverse Town to be guarded by the friends Sora had made in his journey. So, she explored the town and made a home for herself there, for a while, but, she could not keep her thoughts away from Riku. She wanted to save him too, but, Sora had convinced her to stay. Giving him a parting charm which strangely enough would serve as one of his keyblade forms, she soon departed from that place anyways.

The sands felt hot on Destiny Island. They were no longer so welcoming, and, she could feel a presence lurking about every corner. Sora returned for her, and fought which she assumed was the root of the darkness plaguing the verses: Ansem. Her friend’s victory there, ironically, separated them as the worlds fell back into their proper places in reality. She was sent back to the true version of Destiny Island, just before Sora could reach her. In their secret place – a cave where they drew and a mysterious close door rested – she found what had been drawn such a long time ago; a half-drawing which she completed depicting Sora giving her a particular fruit, a symbol of love on the world that they both called home. She returned the favor and then time jumped and she could not remember.

There was a boy with no name. She missed him terribly. Then, there was a silhouette something growing in that darkness again. It laid beyond that door, and it tempted her, every day. She would venture back after school, longing for the boy to return. However, one day their ‘secret’ place held another secret, something created that should have never been. And it had opened that door. The door that had once only been painted, but now was there, there enough for her to peer across the threshold. A strong feeling of uneasy kept her from stepping through. Yet, fate can be ever so cruel. She fell, rather, she was pulled by something that was not there at all.

A cloaked figure spoke in the doorway’s darkness. Kingdom Hearts held no truth at all only this presence. This silhouette stole her voice. It put a sphere of dancing colour in her hand. She turned back wishing desperately to see the other side. It explained a twisted game: its game where power sought became the desire of those cast there. In those moments she only wished to remember, to remember that boy’s name. The name never came. A whiteness took her and at its center was a fountain. Soon thereafter, she forgot entirely.

There were only images . . . places, people and powers with no names. She glanced down seeing something that was not actually there. It was important, incredibly important and dangling down from what appeared to be steel was a particular fruit. A fruit that too had no name, but, was ever so important to her. What she remembered when she awakened was the key to everything. It could open up portals to an unknown destiny. She knew not its name, but, the image of a keychain filled her mind, and, trailing upwards towards a blade, shaped to fit and open a lock. Then, nothing, nothing but the fountain and the white; nothing was in her grasp.

If you're not very well versed in Kingdom Hearts lore basically I'm taking Kairi from the end of Kingdom Hearts I.

Writing example:

Across the sand, there were many shuffling feet; a few children laughed, and, there was a ball being tossed high up into the air, as, waves crashed and billowed in the foreground. Every now and then, the footprints left by those feet would be swept away by the onslaught of the streaming, and, thereafter, rescinding tide.

All together there were three (children at play), two boys and a girl.

“Tidus put that down before you hurt someone, ya?” One of the boys with spiked orange hair cupped his hands and shouted to his friend. The blonde turned and stuck his tongue out, flipping off his legs into the ball to send it flying off down the beach towards the others.

The girl giggled.

“Don’t take him so serious like . . . Kairi.” Wakka tilted his head at the ball and simply caught it with one hand. “Ya see,” he showed a bright grin, “he has got no game.”

“What was that?!” The youth was rushing back towards the pair of them now, and, Wakka dropped the ball, and, with a quick kick he sent it soaring again.

“I said,” he cupped his hands again, “you have no game!” Wakka chuckled, watching as the ball clobbered its mark. His laughter still echoed as a soft ululation came upon his ears.

“H-hey, uh, Wakka?” Rather soft spoken from his side, Kairi, kept her hands interlocked just behind her back, and, stared out, beyond the shoreline into the waves themselves. In the distance the sun had begun to set, leaving the horizon a milky, hued, orange. She seemed to be looking straight at that glowing orb.

“Ya?”

“You really can't remember?”

He turned back towards her, and, the ball flew past him. His head tilted at Tidus, and, his eyes became a glare, thereafter, he shook his head. “This again; I thought you were past it?” The blonde was about to shout, and, his hand was outstretched pointing at Wakka, as though, he wanted to poke fun at his expense. Tidus did, but, stifled such intent when he saw the overdrawn expression shared between his two friends.

“There are more out there, so, many more . . . worlds. I know . . . I-I remember them.”

“Kai, you’ve been having ‘em again, the dreams, ya?” She nodded but even at her own admitted fact did not want to believe them as just part of her imagination.Even now, she could see it, as bright as it was, out there, darkness loomed. And, those around her felt like seashells, taking the place of those that were once part of the sand, only to be stolen by the tides.

Is this…really all there is? She wondered.

“Cheer up okay,” Wakka grinned his wide grin. “Tidus over there, can’t stand to see a girl cry.” He smirked and stared down at the shorter of them. “I think it’s ‘cuz he is one, ya know? Just a big crybaby himself.”

Kairi laughed. She giggled and for a few moments, forgot again. The boy still had no name, and, as she would probably never admit to herself, when, everything came to change, she wanted to forget, because, it was too painful to half remember.

This is a new sample I wrote just now, so, it should be nowhere else.
