What influenced your choice of character?
#1
New discussion topic that could yield some interesting and insightful answers; why did you choose the character you chose for the Omniverse? Have an intriguing answer? Post 'em here Tongue

For why I chose Jon - Firstly, I guess it was a desire to stand out from the crowd somewhat, throw even more variety in the mix. I took a careful look at this site before joining, and a vast majority of the characters were either video-game protagonists or from some anime. This isn't bad, though, of course. One of the things I love about this site and what drawn me into it is the vast, colourful array of characters on here that hail from every genre you could pull from the hat. I didn't want to be 'just everyone', though. I wanted to do something different. I noticed a big lack of TV/book series character love, so I just wanted to be the first to represent on that front Confusedmug:

Secondly, he's an easy character to develop. The great thing about the ASOIAF series is that no character is exactly good or entirely evil. Nobody's personality is set in stone, exactly. I guess one could say that Jon is the closest thing to the 'good-guy' in the series, but there's also a darker, more hate-filled layer of depth to him. The bitterness of being an illegitimate child in a world where that's frowned down upon deeply, and being envious of his trueborn and more important siblings. I thought it'd be an interesting point of view to write from, and see how exactly the chaos and confusion around him in the Omniverse changed his personality and moral physch.

Finally, if you didn't notice already, I'm a huge, HUGE GoT/ASOIAF fan Tongue I guess you could say it's what got me into the fantasy genre as a whole, since I had never watched the LoTR trilogy or anything like that before (please don't kill me). Jon isn't my favourite character, but he's certainly up there in the list. I hope George doesn't decide to kill him off before the series ends.

tl;dr - Wanted to do something different from everyone else, interesting character to write, big GoT/ASOIAF fanboy

Guu: Something made me really want to play as Guu.
Could be because I like the concept behind Goddesses. Could be because I like playing short cute characters. ^^ Maybe I just like her snark. Whatever it was, the desire the play her has been with me for a really long time. I had a build for her in Pathfinder, one for 4e, but I never got a chance to role play.
Inspired by Edgardo, I was hunting for a forum RP I could play in. I specifically looked for a forum that Guu would fit in and well, I found the Omniverse.

Lopunny: I had a dozen or so candidates for secondary. I went with Lopunny because that species of pokemon really allowed for a personality that matches my own. (I'm much closer to Lopunny in actual demeanor then I am with Guu...)
Also, I had this series idea a long time ago that plays with the concepts explored in Pokemon Philosophy, so I already had story themes to work with before I had even started.

What inspired me to make my character was Gilgamesh~. I had admired the character Gilgamesh for the longest of times so when I found out that he was making New Babylon I decided to make this character. I contacted him the day I made the character and got a roleplay organized. So then that was where we started. I had thought that Gilgamesh needed a partner(as short-term as it was) for him to get New Babylon started. If I was him I don't think that it would be too much fun making a kingdom by myself. So I was there to give him a hand.

As for my backstory I like tragic characters. I had the character appearance saved for........something else. I needed a backstory. So when I was off to clean the gill the backstory had hit me from out of the blue. I had considered it amazing and I had used that as my character's backstory.

Proto Man - I played Proto Man on this website's 'spiritual predecessor.' I was originally going to play the Doctor from Doctor Who, but Omni helped me realize how hard it'd be to make him really work in this setting without some awkward changes. Mega Man was also the first character I played on the original multiverse pbp rpg I joined back in 2006.

Anyway, the short answer is that I like Proto Man. He's my favorite character from the Mega Man series, because he probably has the most depth (abandoment issues, antihero, potentially dying, scarf an' sunglasses). I mean, srsly, if I cosplay as someone, it should be obvious I think they're baller and would want to write my own adventures.

I've also said it before, but if I ever become a famous writer, I want to do a novelization of the classic Mega Man series.

SHANG - He's a good guy. Why wouldn't I want to roleplay as him?

Ganondorf: I'm not sure. Maybe it's because he's SO different from how I actually am. I'm honest, nice, calm, and admittedly too trusting. GD is conniving, powerful, and willing to use people to reach his goals. And unlike many other villains from video games, he's not a one dimensional character. He's just a perfect foil to my everyday life.

Stalker: I had chosen Stalker specifically to be an antagonist to Samus. Probably why it didn't work out. Not enough interest in the character beyond creating it.

Buggy: Buggy is pretty much in the same boat as Stalker. Super interesting concept that falls short in execution. I picked him as more of a humorous character to play, as opposed to Ganon's serious stuff, but I just couldn't keep it up.

And a possibility for the future: Krieg: Like Buggy, this would go the humor route, but with slightly more depth as his subconcious attempts to fight through the insanity. Maybe if I ever get more free time, I'll pick up Krieg and just have him solo his way through the Omniverse.

Aang: Everyone can relate to him, at least somewhat. Makes him easy to write. Also airbending's cool as hell.

I chose Sivo, as not only am I a huge aficionado of warhammer 40k, but he would also serve as a contrast to most of the other characters. Sivo was raised in an actively hostile universe, where a lone shred of usable knowledge from the past is the holy grail. The general tone of his home setting acts as a reminder that not all characters are lucky enough to be surrounded by magic, non-sapient technology, friends, and happiness. His religious aspect is also something I'm hoping to explore, seeing as how we have a short god, and a megalomaniac narcissistic angel.

I'm still thinking about what might happen when he discovers the dataverse...
Torcher of tomes, slayer of sorcerers, taker of ears, and flayer of men. Reasonable rates.

Atelos- Long story short, I watched 300 found Spartans super cool and I found this site. I wanted to be a badass Spartan and then I saw powerful people and I was like "hey why not make him a pyromancer as well" and thus the twisted Spartan was born. I still do not know exactly what Atelos is,considering he is still in development and I'm finding more cool things I want him to have while I'm writing stories. He turned out to be a fun character to write as and to develop and I wonder what he will be like in a year or more.

Gilgamesh- My favorite anime is fate/zero and Gilgamesh is my favorite Villain. The best part is that he is the complete opposite of Atelos. He is cocky, evil and he uses people. His abilities are really cool to use in my opinion and his arrogance is very fun to write. I just love the character and I really enjoy it when I find out new cool things about him.

I promised I'd write this a while back, but I didn't, so I'm writing it now even though I could have gotten by unnoticed without writing this.

I chose Mami Tomoe as my character, at first, because I was watching Madoka Magica and she seemed like the epitome of my expectations for the anime - A simple romp through girlyville with magic and rainbow hero-flavoured sprinkles on top. Then she got decapitated and I had to go to the bathroom and cry for a while.

Later on, she seemed like the only remaining shard of my expectations. She had managed to become arguably the most skilled Magical Girl featured in the anime (Homura doesn't count because she just knows the month like the back of her hand), while being oblivious to the evils and injustices of the world and her line of work in the process. This makes her stick out as a pillar of light among endless shadows, or at least that's the best way I can put it, and it also makes her the archetypal hero I've always dreamed of. Archetypal, yes, but I love the holier-than-thou-but-not-stuck-up-enough-to-outright-say-it type for some reason. Which might make sense, because I'm that myself minus the 'but-not-stuck-up-enough-to-outright-say-it' part.

In other words, I like Mami because she's the blundering veteran. She contradicts herself while being the (OPINION ALERT) best Magical Girl on the show, despite only getting three real episodes of screentime.

I like using Anime characters because I can just watch something with them in it to get pumped to write as them. I guess this goes for any television or movie thing.... I definitely know this: if I was a capable artist I would only do OC's, but alas, I am not... and struggling to find good pictures is a bothersome I will not tolerate lol.

I dunno honestly. Sasuke is definetly not my norm and looking back on it, instead I probably should have picked just Naruto himse---SHARINGAN!!!!!

'nuff said.

I picked Link because he's the protaganist of my favourite video game series ever. And this particular Link because Ocarina of Time is my favourite game ever. Pretty easy to pick. I've had trouble with him because he doesn't really have much in the way of guidelines for personality but I've finally worked him out.

Udyr is awesome. His powers are great, I can see ways to expand upon them, and he has this cool animal vs. civilisation dynamic to him. He's basically if a badarse Tarzan with spirit powers was taken in by monks.

Ironically when One Piece first began I wasn't that into it and I found Luffy a tad annoying. Then I gave it a chance and it quickly became one of my to favorite series'. I fell in love with both the manga/anime and the vast array of dynamic characters. Choosing Luffy to write with has proven more than fruitful.

I believe I've found my niche. It's an absolute blast writing with him and many have commended me for capturing his essence perfectly. I'm constantly flooded with ideas and where I want to take his story. His lust for adventure, eccentric personality and ability to befriend everyone he encounters is also reflective of my own personality. I know not where exactly I'm going with his character or how I'm going to get there, I just know it's going to be an exhilarating journey!

I'm going to be the King of Pirates! YOSH!

I picked Harry because I'm hugely in love with the Dresden Files series, and I wanted my character to be someone that not everyone knew but that I still liked a lot. My original idea was actually Franken Stein from Soul Eater, but I decided that I'd do something from a slightly more obscure series and that was Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. I just love his constant struggle to be good; it's not just something that happens. He's not Lawful Good with no effort, he's Neutral Good and he has to work really hard to keep from sliding into Chaotic Neutral/Lawful Evil territory, but at the same time he spits in the face of stupid traditions and doesn't flinch from doing what has to be done.

Neku... that's a story for another day. Smile

Well I chose Retane here, because, well I missed the guy. I wrote for him in Chubbs.

Initially since Kenny wanted to be apart of it and he wanted Deadpool, I chose Raze, a Lythian almost close to Arith. Could be fun. But I am more better maining Enroshia, or Retane or someone that has a personality to match my own that I have worked on

I was able to give it a twist andwell yeah. Retane is back... and I can play around with him a bit and see how his new choices make him who he becomes.

I chose Deadpool because he's awesome. Usually, I become bored with characters that are too serious, or that don't have a social personality.

Deadpool isn't too serious or have a anti-social personality, so all works.

I also thought about choosing Doc Holiday and Aero.

Doc Holiday would be pretty B.A.. A fight with the Doc and Roland the Gunslinger would have made me poop myself xD

'Cause Magus is actually a really well-crafted character with more motivation as a villain than just 'f the world lul!' He's pretty versatile, also, as someone who is willing do anything to reach a goal without being a Ganondorf-esque 'hard villain' (not that there's anything wrong with that).

That said I've got the biggest hard-on for stealth-based characters. Snake, Sam Fisher, even the Ranger from Shadow of Mordor, etc. Vidya characters, really. I grew up immersed and invested in video game characters much more deeply than those from film/books/etc. Though Light Yagami'd be fun. Albeit unplayable in this universe.

You could always make it so the Death Note works differently on Primes than it does on secondaries and npcs. Like a restriction Omni put on it as he want's to be entertained and the death note wouldn't make for an exciting prime fight?

This could actually be dope as you could have other things occur once their name is written. With a slew of different moves the possibilities would be endless.... just not instant death xD. Where there is a will, there is a way!
