Oh yeah, as long as you pay for it OOC, you can obtain items IC any way you want.

Hell, there's been a number of occassions where I had Guu hand out phones to other characters just so they'd have a justication to have one (hard to justify summoning a smart phone when you're from a world that don't have em.)
