Journey Through Paradise
#1
Of course it had to take an eternity and a half to get here. Through the tiers of Coruscant, whose elevators perplexingly seemed to travel faster going up rather than down, much to Jaixe’s chagrin and Ash’s amusement, as well as moving through the empty white abyss of the Nexus again, on horseback to save time, they still spent several hours traveling. Although, Ash was helpful in spending the time by sifting through the dataverse once more only to stumble upon a pirated stream of the tournament. The first rounds were almost over, though it didn’t matter much in the long run to Jaixe.

After all, most people eliminated in the first round are rarely worth it. Still, he did want to make a note of all the combatants that he could. It wasn’t as if there was much else to do along the way. At least Ash was somewhat entertaining to listen to when they watched the various bouts take place. By the time they reached and traversed the gateway to Camelot from the Nexus, the rounds were nearing their completion. It seemed, to Jaixe at least, that many of the victors were already decided before it all began, though some still held a level of uncertainty. What they arrived at, through the gate, would be described as beyond idyllic by many of a sane and rational mind.

To Jaixe, it was more appalling and insufferable than he’d appreciate.

They arrived out of the gate, which was guarded by a handful of leather-armored guards, a small garrison force no doubt, and several standing, ancient stones atop a grassy knoll with sparse trees laid about them in no particularly order. Beyond, one could see the tall mountain range that spiked into the clouds, and the white marble city built into the side of a selected gray mountain. That was Minas Tirith, the capital of Camelot.

Around the city, and in truth, as far as the eye could see were nothing else but small villages, farms, hills, and the occasional and surprisingly dense forest of towering greenery. This, combined with the warm touch of the sun against his cold skin, the gentle breeze, and the unusual, serene quietness was almost like poison to Jaixe’s senses. Any more peaceful and he would have preferred an eternity in the Nexus to another moment in this verse.

“What a wonderful paradise…” Jaixe spoke aloud, sarcastically mocking the setting they found themselves in with a roll of his eyes, much to the confusion of one of the approaching guards that overheard him.

“Welcome to Camelot m’lord, m’lady. What brings you to these parts?” One of the guards addressed the two new-comers, standing ahead of the others, and appearing taller, more confident. The others behind him, however, seemed to shrink under the gaze of Jaixe’s glowing orange eyes that bore down on them. That was an enjoyable sight to behold… It may have made up for the appalling scenery surrounding Jaixe at the time.

The leader was blonde, middle-aged, and resolute in his stance and straight in his posture. He donned on clean, glimmering metal armor that almost seemed too decorative for guard duty, given that the man’s other colleagues had simple, rough-looking leather. He seemed to keep a hand on the handle of his sheathed sword, kept at his side by a leather belt with an odd emblem adorning the buckle that Jaixe did not immediately recognize.

After a moment or two of silence, with the black-coated, red-eyed steed Jaixe rode upon huffing and stomping on the grass with a series of thuds, almost seeming impatient with being stationary for too long, Jaixe deigned to finally reply to the man’s question. “We have come to watch the tournament, and little else,” he spoke with a rather bored tone, as if dismissing the guards as nothing more than a nuisance at the moment. He went back to analyzing their surroundings. This verse was considerably lower-tech than Coruscant was, but perhaps that may be a rather large deception on their part?

“The tournament, eh? A lot of others like you came ‘round here too. Awful lot of Primes.” The lead guard responded, motioning the other guards forward. “We’ll have to check you to make sure you’re not Imperial spies or what not.”

This guy was unusually calm with addressing an orange-eyed man and a demon-like woman, obviously he has had this task for far too long to be caught by surprise or fear… Either that, or the walking skeleton Jaixe called a partner was through here recently.

Beyond the elevator ride up to the surface of Coruscant, where Jaixe seethed as politely and quietly as he could without punching the walls of the small spaced carrier, Ash was already looking for ways to kill boredom. She didn't pull out the Comm until she was on top of the summoned mount, a horse with brown splotches all over its otherwise white coat. Unimaginative compared to the demonic horse Jaixe climbed up on, but it served its purpose. Ash couldn't remember ever riding a horse, yet this came second nature to her. Like her summoning to this place downloaded her basic knowledge of convenient transportation into her mind. Which wouldn't be too hard, she supposed, given the computer sitting firmly in her skull.

She didn't exactly know what to do to kill time, so she decided to look into things relating Camelot. She wished she'd payed a bit more attention in school, because she recognized the name as something historical in her old life. Though she hardy thought anything she would have learned in that gap in life would have done her any good. Especially since none of this sounded like public education worthy. More like the stuff you find on your own by surfing the web. Which.. Is how she found it.

Ash started with a map, downloaded it, turned to fashion - if you could call it that - after deciding she wanted another wardrobe change when she got there, and then focused on the tournament. She found the usual program and advertising online flyer. It bright colors to catch the eye, its time and place. But she also found an assortment of a hundred or so devices. All in one area. She began to leisurely hack the devices and sort through what they had to offer. She then acted as director as she fed Jaixe a film of action and observation. At one point, they even were able to watch from one of the contestants what was happening in the fight. This part particularly filled Ash with pride as a hacker, to find such a gem.

It was over by the time they reached the gates to the verse of their destination, and so she cut the feed but not her ties with the devices. As far as she knew, she couldn't steal OM from other players, so there was no point. However, she could use the connections to the devices for information gathering later. Ideally. So she stuffed the pen sized item back in its hiding place in time for them to pass through the gate of Camelot.

It was bright.. Some how more bright than the Nexus. Burning her eyes and forcing her to stop. She brought her hand up to the curve of her horns, and shaded her eyes from the harsh sun in an attempt to stop the sting. The tiefling looked around from her shade to observe the beautiful scenery.

However, like her traveling companion, this new verse has horribly bright. And too much nature for her liking.

The sun beating down on her bluish purple skin warmed her gently, the breeze floating by cooled off her exposed shoulders and drifted through her short hair for a breath of fresh air. She actually liked these two things. She liked them when this same thing happened on her trip to sea. But unlike her coastal start of her last adventure in her world, this air had a woodsy pine smell. And it was less appealing than the fresh air of an open ocean.

Her companion was the first to remark on it, his sarcasm and eye roll said about everything she could. And confused someone whom she didn't see until now. Which was surprising given that he was in the gaudiest set of armor she's ever had the displeasure of laying eyes on. That said.. It wasn't his fault the sun glared down from the big open sky and mirrored off his metal right into her eyes. She had to move her horse up a step to be able to accurately get a good look of this guy.

Handsome, battle worn, respectful posture of a soldier. Though she deducted a few point's for the m'lady crack, the man stood out in more ways than on but still screamed NPC. Especially a stronger one than most in physic and willpower, evident in how he stood erect while the others coward behind him. Maybe he was a Secondary, ordered out here for a purpose. She couldn't really tell, but they found out his purpose rather quickly with some casual conversation.

The woman on top of the horse probably stood out the most to these men, she did glance upon something about how people in this verse didn't particularly enjoy the presence of non-humans. She thought it only referred to the dumber peasants, but it would seem that the assumption was wrong. Her tail moved to the opposite side of her beast, hooked onto its leg without harming the animal, and aided in her balance as she leaned over. The morality of the group was weak, and some even backed up.

"Oh, is that all?" As if it was her intention to do so, Ash let her feet out of the stirrups of the saddle, rolled off of the horse to land in front of the armor clad man. She stood up slowly, allowing her skirt to ruffle back into place to hide her concealed Quill and Comm. When she was fully on her feet, she was barely a foot from him, her knuckles on her hips and her tail whipping around with excitement. As to what was exciting her, it was hard to tell.

"So big guy, is this going to be a normal pat down, or should I just get rid of my clothes now?" Ash's tone went from playfully lazy but all around calm, to a hint of seduction. She let both hands move at this, her right going down her thigh and grabbing at the end of the skirt, lifting it just slightly at the same time she grabbed at the top of her dress and tugged it away from her body. A man as tall as he was could easily be able to see down into her top, however the gap wasn't that big.

The man with the adorned metal had his eyes on her, but not for the reasons she probably thought has he watched the demon girl tumble off her horse and then offer to disrobe. He may have had a little extra color to his weathered cheeks, and had to clear his huge throat, but managed to stay professional as he spoke again. "No m'lady. Nothing as barbaric as that, we merely need to look through your belongings. Please hand over any communicators, weapons, and bags that you may have."

Barbaric.. "How boring." She teased, snapping her top back into place, but then grabbed her skirt with more purpose this time. She lifted it with one hand, showing anyone who was interested that she wasn't just flashing them but had concealed weapons, the grabbed The Quill and the physical half of her Comm from the straps on her thigh. Mentally connected to it, she locks them out of her ill-gotten file, and disconnects from the other devices she'd been using. They hadn't been too protected and she'd be able to use them again. She did all of this out of precaution, but she wasn't even sure they would be able to figure out how to open her device, let alone use it.

As instructed, she also handed over The Claw, but that was all she had. Other than the dress. Which she could alter with the snap of her finger. Maybe she would do that while she waited for them to inspect her morbid weapons. It wouldn't take them very long to figure out her rope was black human hair, and if they tipped the dagger over it would spill out it's ink of blood. Not enough to empty it by a long shot, but only to splatter if shook. Actually.. She might find it more entertaining to see the reaction of the weaker willed discover this.

Jaixe watched and scoffed at Ash’s small attempt at seduction but deferred commenting on the matter as he stepped down from his own mount. He fished for the mobile dataverse device and the attached communicator and offered it to one of the more timid guards, glaring them down as they took the duo of items off of him. Seeing as he had no weapons on him at the time, there was nothing else to offer.

The guards did a quick scan through the items they were given to examine, as well as the horses to ensure there was no additional baggage that needed to be searched through. Jaixe was particularly amused at their attempts to discern the red liquid within the Quill that Ash wielded, though kept a stony face. When the blood suddenly splattered due to one tipping the weapon over to inspect it further, the guards seemed shocked to find out what it was. Though the captain seemed unamused and unsurprised.

The man with the decorative armor walked forward again, “It seems you two are packing rather light. You stated that you were here for the tournament, correct?” The captain inquired once more, with Jaixe merely nodding in response, utilizing his usual dull and bored expression as a signal that this delay was quite unwelcome.

“Indeed. Perhaps you can offer us direction, seeing as you have held us up.” Jaixe suggested, impatiently, though slowly tapping with his foot now.

“I was going to offer such. It is a few leagues south of the capital, past the forest. I trust you can weave your way.”
“Indeed.”

It was a few moments longer that the guards inspected the equipment that they were given, getting hung up on the rather oddly-styled weaponry that Ash carried on her person. Soon enough, however, the duo was given their equipment and sent on their way with the standard farewell.

“How dull… Though at least it was less intrusive than the Imperial scanning machines…” Jaixe commented, as the two went along the trodden dirt path towards the marble city of Minas Tirith, the wind blowing softly to their side and the pattering of their mounts occupying the space around them. “I trust you kept your links to those streams in your head?” He asked of Ash, though deigned not to look in her direction, but rather kept his gaze forward.

Ash was nothing but amused by the reactions to the Claw and Quill. One of the inspecting guards went pale as he realized the copper scented crimson liquid was real blood. Another was feeling sick to his stomach, who finally tossed up today's breakfast upon the discovery of the hair. She didn't need them to apologize for their comrade's reactions and verbal explanations of "Can't keep rookies nowadays." to know he was new on the front lines. The demonic human then woread the most satisfied smirk on her face, as if she had indeed got something out of the half-hearted mild attempts of seduction.

This smirk firmly planted itself on Ash's face for the remaining search of the small party's belongings. Only growing as Jaixe words came out of his mouth with stiff force, demanding compensation for their wasted time. The head guard in the over elaborate metal seemed all to happy to comply once they were cleared of any spy status. Because Imperial spies were of the horn and tail kind. She was more likely to be a hell is spy, serving the dark lord by collecting information regardless of the contents.. Which made Jaixe the devil if that were the truth. Which she supposed could still be true. As the evil lord was a master at deception and the attractive heartless matched this in several ways.

Eventually they were given back their respective items, shaking hands made the two weapons' metal knock against one another. This just made Ash smile more. She reached her equipment to the places they were before. Then with the same agility and balance from before Ash returned to the saddle of her plain looking horse, where she waited for her partner to also climb up. And while she waited, she sought out to reconnect to the devices from before. So when the heartless spurred his mount back to her side and asked his question she could confidently say, "Of course." With another smile.

She waited a bit longer, to walk further away from prying ears before offering more. "What is your wish, Dark Lord?" She added with a playful smirk.

"Actually I disconnect from them out of percussion just for you, but reestablishing the connection wasn't that big of a chore. I don't believe anyone in the Omniverse has ever heard of password protection. Collecting information digitally seems to be the best way to go." She kindly informed. "I could probably record the video feed while I do some other task for you, and we can go through the fights later when we're bored and with nothing to do."

When exactly that would be was a mystery to her, but he might have something else he wants her for. Other than recon.

”Dark Lord?” Jaixe mouthed with a raised eyebrow of curiosity at that choice of words, which was promptly stopped when she provided the streams once more. “Yes, it might be best to forestall analyzing the combat prowess of our potential enemies… in favor of that,” Jaixe replied, referring to the enormous marble city that was increasingly taking up their view, “that monstrosity of goodwill and valor…” He paused for a moment as they continued, seeming to muse over what his next plan of action would be.

“We are going to ascertain their strengths and possible flaws in their defenses, you and me …” Jaixe continued, explaining their reason for sticking around, “a cursory examination of a handful of the outlying villages and a more thorough one for the capital should suffice.”

Jaixe then looked over at Ash, actually remembering for once that she appeared very distinctly nonhuman. Then he remembered that he, himself, was somewhat off given his ears and eyes.

“Perhaps we should also be cautious in the near-future, I’ve heard some reports of xenophobia from some of the villages I mentioned. I would rather avoid drawing too much undue attention to ourselves…” He commented with a musing tone, playing with one of his ears as they trotted along at a gentle pace, the wind now dying down to a soft crawl.

“As much as I’m sure you’re heartbroken at not being able to cut loose, it is quite important to remain inconspicuous.”

It wasn’t long until they began passing through the forest, the thick trees offering welcome shade against the heat of the sun that hung above them. A stale wooded smell permeated the area due to the lack of wind blowing through, and the only part of the forest that seemed to be somewhat illuminated was the overgrown path they were currently on. Of course, also here, Jaixe seemed a little more on edge, though barely noticeable to those unaware of the shift. He stood a little straighter and seemed to occasionally examine their surroundings, as if expecting something unwelcome to appear to block their path or ambush them. Of course, within the thick foliage of the forest floor and the dense shadows, anything could be hiding.

“I’m beginning to think that that sergeant may not be what he originally appeared as…” Jaixe thought aloud with a low, whispering tone, apparently picking up on something hiding within the darkness, but he wasn’t certain as to what yet. A shadow or two seemed to bolt around to either side of them, but were difficult to ascertain or even spot. It was a challenge to even discern if they were human or not. A challenge which Jaixe could not meet quite yet, though he remained at alert.

Ash's eyes were on him, despite not having irises. She was listening to him intently, despite her bored look on her face. She would rather not censor herself, but she also knew of the racial prejudice of the people in this verse. More so than any other verse in some cases. Particularly towards anyone who wasn't obviously human. Say... A tiefling. With her horns, tail, and oddly colored skin, she was a flashing red light. Add her morbid weapons into the mix.. And well she was spot on for some demon like creature. All she needed was a pair of wings, and she could terrorize through town.

Unfortunately, that was the opposite of what Jaixe was saying at this exact moment. Instead of summoning up a costume pair of wings, she'd most likely summon up a cloak and hood. Probably purple.. To give the illusion she had wealth. As a Prime, that shouldn't be unbelievable. "Fine.. I'll be on my best behavior." She promised, with a groan. She looked over, noticing he was touching his own pointed ears. They weren't as exaggerated as her own, and barely stood out in her opinion, though to anyone on the look for a non-human to beat down he might look like a nice target. "Your hair hides your ears, so just don't bring attention to them." She commented, bringing her hands to her frontal pointed horns. "Mine aren't so easily hidden.. I wonder if I cut them off, would they grow back due to the natural healing of Primes?" She thought out loud as the entered the shade of the forest.

It was instantly easier to look around, and cooled off rather quickly now that the sun was cut from her skin. She was not the intuition type, normally, but she also could sense something was a miss. She acted as normal though, as normal as it was for her. Relaxed, bored almost. Uninterested in the world around her. But even she caught the shadows moving around them. She glanced over at him finally when he spoke, noticing his tensed position. His rigid back, his eyes not on her or where they were going, the orange glowing in the shade.. She tried to comprehend his words, and could only guess the man in armor.. "You mean this isn't our chance to meet Robin Hood and he Merry Men?" She asked, slipping her feet from the straps at the horse's side.

"I guess that wouldn't make sense.. Would it? We have no riches to give to the poor, nor any history of taking more than a fair share from them." She added thoughtfully, touching her chin.

“I rather doubt that blunder of the woods would pop up here like we have…” Jaixe commented, looking ahead as one of the shadows, flanked by two more, slowly emerged from the thickets surrounding the traveling duo. When they closed in on them, Jaixe recognized the leader instantly and was hardly surprised.

“Are all guard sergeants in this world corrupt, or is it just you?” Jaixe addressed the sergeant that greeted them from before with condescension. It was odd that the man could advance ahead of them so quickly without Jaixe noticing, but that was hardly the more pressing matter here.

The sergeant smirked, as the two other well-armored thugs that posed as guards stood at either side of him with swords glistening in the darkened forest. His own armor also retained that uncharacteristic sheen, though his expression did not match the gallant charade he donned earlier.

“The only corruption here is that which you brought yourself, freaks of nature.” The sergeant chimed back with malice, “Your kind are unwelcome here.”

“And I suppose that you and your half dozen “guards” are going to stop us from passing through?” Jaixe inquired with a confident tone. After all, the last group of commoners that challenged them ended up dying rather swiftly. These fake guards would hardly be a challenge.

“Oh, I would never challenge a prime such as yerselfs on my lonesome,” the sergeant started coyly, a noticeable thudding and shaking permeating the ground beneath them all now, “but I have quite the friend who is dying to meet you.”

As if on cue, a much larger shadow, one that easily dwarfed the guards, started to emerge from further down the path. A low rumbling could be heard accompanying the great beast, as it stumbled forward, briefly illuminated by rays of sunlight shooting through the thick forest canopy. In those brief moments of illumination, Jaixe and Ash could discern grayish-green, scale-like skin with noticeable cracks, wrinkles, and other odd marks adorning it. When it closed in on the two, more of its features became clear. It was a beast with only the vague shape of a man, with eyes that bulged outward and a large snubbed nose dividing its features. Its mouth was large with cracked, yellow teeth as it roared at the duo with saliva and mucous being flung out of its maw. Its body was flabby and fat, but clearly hid muscles and a strength that far surpassed that of any human, or ten for that matter.

“A troll… how quaint.” Jaixe commented, looking up at the roaring, hungry monster that emerged from the forest. All around them as well, the guards stood with bows ready and arrows trained on the duo. This was quite the uneven situation they had found themselves in.

“I don’t suppose that grapple can carry two?” Jaixe inquired of Ash without looking back at her, keeping his gaze trained on the sergeant and his pet beast that seemed eager to smash its prey.

The horse Ash was on came to a stop beside Jaixe, the leather creaking as the animal flexed its muscles to come to the short halt; the heavy hooves making a soft thud as they firmly planted themselves into the hardened earth of the beaten path. How many other primes has this man trapped in this same way? Were they the first? The only ones? Guinea pigs to a madman's dark ambitions? These questions may or may not have passed through the teifling's mind. It was hard to tell with the look on her face, which was a very typical natural look that was now her normal face. Uninterested, indifferent, even bored.

She seemed one hundred percent unfazed by the overly done glitterrific 'bad guy' whom she couldn't help but compare to that one villain in that animated film of a Native American princess falling for an invading England man. The one that did a whole song about finding gold so he can be rich and famous back in his homeland. She imagined that this man would be just at home in fine gold silks and glitter. His problem was probably that he wasn't in that situation at all, but watching the front gate with a group of weak NPCs.

The woman beside Jaixe made a big deal about yawning as their wannabe trapper sprouts out a lot of racist none-sense, opening her mouth wide enough to wrinkle her nose and show off her elongated canines on both the top and bottom sets of teeth. She seemed to remember her promise of behaving - and in turn her manners - as she played up a delicate hand to wave across her gaping jaw. Her eyes move around them while Jaixe took part in the conversation. It was probably best this way, if it wasn't known yet, she wasn't the most elegant talker. She didn't really try to improve those skills either. Because when it came to making deals, she knew how to get what she wanted. However, when it came to getting herself out of trouble, it was easier to leave the talking to her fists.

She noted that besides the man who vomited upon discovering her blood - or was he just sick to his stomach? She has already forgotten - she noticed that there weren't as many as there had been. If anything, there were enough men to attempt to intimidate them. Which had to be the biggest joke she's ever heard. Besides the fearless girl who is all but ready to throw herself off buildings to get to the lower levels of Coruscant, she couldn't bring the images of her partner flinching at these sad attempts at striking fear into the hearts of 'evil' to her mind. That's how unbelievable this was. And why she brushed it off.

However, when the snarling, ugly, figure with a stench that could chase anyone with a weak stomach away by just standing in the wind stomped its way through the cluster of threes and into view..

Now, suddenly, they had the girl's attention. The sun glistened off his dripping saliva, and brought the irisis to a mere dot in the the middle of its eyes as it heaved its horrid morning breath into the area while it fixated its vision on its new prey. Eager, it would seem, to have something to bash around with its chose of club. Then with a clear intake of fresh air its body swelled at the chest, before it flung its rage towards them in a loud roar that shook the will of every human there! Except the unmovable wall with its over exaggerated gold graffiti display over his shiny unused plates of armor.

"You only brought one? How unfortunate." Her voice was clear and loud, and unmoved by the gross twisted being in front of her. Her horse, however, wasn't as brave as his rider. It pawed at the ground nervously, but stayed where her steady hands held him. There was a slight nickering of fear from it as well. Ash only stared at the monster with an intense interest one might find in one such as that villain from the movie, personal goals driving them. The corner of one side of her mouth pulled back to show her new excitement of seeing a mountain of a beast. Well.. More like a very big hill. But it wouldn't matter, she would have her fun.

The bows bending as the draw strings were pulled back with loaded arrows made a sound much like the leather under her did, but there was a voice that did reach her in her lust for action. Jaixe. Asking if her grapple can carry two. She brought her grinning face to him, without worry, and pulled the grapple into view at her side. The light hit it in just the right way to show its fire immunity runes. She calmly started to load it into her launching mechanism on her arm. "Honestly I've never tried, but fair warning. I'm going straight to the fight." She said before bringing her aim right for the troll. "Want to tag along?" She asked, before finally releasing the horse under her from her command, and as it reared up to paw at the air instead of the earth, she let the hook go.

The force behind the 'gun', could rip her arm off. If it hadn't been skillfully concentrated into shooting the hook. Still, she felt the shock rush through her forearm. Still, she was as unmovable as ever, and reached her arm out to Jaixe as an invitation. A smart man like himself would know he only had a few short moment to accept or decline before it was out of his hands. Time was already slipping away as she closed her hand around the quickly depleting line of jet black hair. In those same few seconds, the archers were letting their arrows go, in a breath the decision would have to be made.

Either way, Ash was on her way to fight herself a troll.

The grapple hook flew true towards the troll, but as good of a shot as Ash was, shooting blindly was always a bad idea. It hit its mark, but only through grazing against both its ugly mug and its fat shoulder. Any other hook would find resistance in rubbing against the enemy, but The Red Devil's Claw sliced right through the cheek and fat of the monster's shoulder. It screeched out in pain as thick tar like blood spluttered out of its veins closest to its neck. Not fatal in the least, but it was always satisfying to get the first hit on something.

In a flash she was being flung through the air right after it, and reached into her skirt and yanked out the Quill, readying an attack. The hook landed into a thick tree with a loud thump, but her flight wasn't done just yet. She was feet from him one second, and the next the troll had his hand raised in a clumsy fist, and the second after that he tried to return the attack. But she was much to quick for this slow attack, and as she passed his fist in mid-air she sliced her blade across the knuckles of the beast and slid past him into the forest beyond. "Damn.." She spat, grabbing the rope to her hook and brought her long legs forward to propel her forward and then around a set of limbs to land on one that was in the tree her hook landed.

She glared, bringing her eyes to white slits before yanking the hook out of the tree with a swift tug! Letting it drop until it snagged on the hair where she left it to observe the fight and see what her opponent was going to do next. Behind her, her tail whipped excitedly. "Alright, big guy, come at me." She taunted, yanking the hook back into her hand so she could reload it for round two, undisturbed by the amount of blood that was staining her outfit from his neck and shoulder. Killer's didn't get distracted by silly things like blood splatter.
