Stephan Donnel, Floating in on the cloud of steam
#1
Character name: Stephan "The Steam Captain" Donnel

Character source: Original

Character history:
The Brittanian Empire. Those two words are rarely seen apart. Well, unless it is some clueless brigblidge who wants a flogging. Hailing from the largest island (It is a Continent, damn you!) in the world, which was named after the Empire, not the other way around by the way, it spanned the whole world. In colonies and forced influence, but still. From one side of the Great Planes to the other, from the Mountains of Russes on the north to the empty flowing white hills of the Ocean of Clouds to the furthest south. That was the Golden Age. The Conduct was forced on the infinitely warring half-nations of Europa, the trade routes were established to the furthest reaches of Asia, the Floating Lands rose from beneath the deepest fathoms of the Clouds and up to the sky. And the sky... It was filled with every kind of skyship you could imagine. From humble dirigibles and Artonov-engines, to the mighty Skyroamers and Dreadnoughts.

That age, of order, of prosperity and innovation, of peace and creation... is long gone. Many argue when the decline began, or why, but most flag the fall of the "Gargantuan", the largest floating battlefortress ever built, over the city-country of Grast as the turning point. Grast was known for two things. The horrible weather and fanatical devotion to government. When said government, in the form of Lord High Innovator Miklen, agreed to form a treaty with the Brittanian Empire to finally try and end the Endless War that was seen as one of the greatest achievements in the history of diplomacy. The "Gargantuan", pinnacle of both mechanical and military might departed to Grast with all possible swiftness to seal the agreement. When the gigantic skyship parted the clouds above the city everyone stopped in their tracks for a moment in awe... Only to take off in panic a second after when multiple, simultaneous and devastating lightning bolts blasted through the sky and shook the ship to the core seemingly targeting all the lifting agent reservoirs at once.

You can train all you want, but nothing short of actual combat experience, the one thing crew of "Gargantuan" lacked, can prepare you for the town-sized floating fortress being devastated in an instant around you. Most of the crew panicked and rushed for the parachutes and emergency blimps and those who didn't were crushed under the mass of screaming people fighting their way to relative safety. Far beneath the sky-high catastrophe alarms blared and similar panic set in the city, people rushing around, far from any sort of control.

Just as the disaster seemed inevitable the flaming, desecrated husk of a skship, with half it's balloons flapping impotently at the wind... began turning sideways. Regardless of all the damage some of the engines were still running and someone was still steering the enormous vessel away from the city beneath. That was quite surprising. Especially considering the fact that the entirety of bridge crew were currently residing in their personal emergency evacuation blimp. Ever so slowly the oversized monstrosity of a flying machine slid towards the outskirts and then even further, to the hillside way, way off the initial trajectory. "Gargantuan" hit the ground at 17:49 Imperial Standard Time. The rumble of the impact could be felt in the air as if it was a wave of force rushing outwards.

Grast military swiftly swooped in for search and rescue. Or maybe they wanted to put out the fire... Yes that was definitely it. In the miraculously intact remains of the bridge they found an astonishing sight. Half burned, missing most of the left side of the torso and impaled on what remained of the steering wheel, but somehow still alive was a man in the remnants of the Royal Aeronautica unter-officer garb.

The High Innovator proved worthy of his title. And of his renown as the best surgeon within the reach of the Empire. He managed to not only save the life of the now-crippled man who saved his city, but also restore his body, with some help of the Royal Steamworks Academy and their mastery of all things mechanical. The hero of the day, who served as a bosun on the Gargantuan, was named Stephan Donnel. Anecdotal evidence collected from escaped sailors claimed that he cut his way through more than twenty men, including several officers, to get to the bridge through the panicking crowd that day. He was a marvel, a hero, a tin man. A significant part of his body was re-made with steam-driven metal. While some replacements weren't unheard of, hell many battle-scarred veterans from the Asian fronts sported steaming wrists or legs, nothing of such magnitude or scale was attempted not before, not after. It was said that only the medicinal prowess of Grastian leader paired with the feats of Imperial engineering could achieve something like this. Sadly, any hope of alliance with the city-state was lost after this incident.

The hero was hailed for a moment, elevated to a slightly higher position and promptly forgotten as the ages of turmoil caught up with Brittanian Empire. Stephan, now a captain of a small skyship, was thrown by his government on practically every problem that could be solved with military might in the next 80 years. And, boy, did he solve them. Plebeian heritage and lack of proper genteel stopped him from attaining a higher rank, or even getting a better ship, but that never stopped him. His ship rode ahead through the First Cloud War and into the crucible of combat, ramming into the infamous "Steel Cloud" of Pirate-King Vanadian. The Colonial Rebellions came to an end shortly after the rolling clouds of steam from endless Imperial engines of war blanketed the forests of Asia and the ships of Aeronautica blotted out the sun. European city-state of Geram claimed it's independence and won it's right to stay out of the Endless War with technology and determination. The history of conflict and turmoil unfolded around Stephan, now known by most as "The Steam Captain", staggeringly appropriate nickname given after the Battle of the river Doth, where his prostheses leaked so much steam it formed a small cloud similar to those around the starting steam-engines.

All that was cut short soon after he hit his 127th birthday. The Royal Aeronautica, or more accurately, the admirals, the oldest of whom was barely 70, kicked him out. "You are too old" they said. "You can no longer perform under pressure" they said. "Please at least find the door before leaving" they said. The Admiralty was left one steam-powered-man and a several walls short after the meeting was over. And the South-Asian Trading Conglomerate found them a new "negotiator".

That agreement didn't last long thou, for despite of how often other officers were calling Stephan "Ungentlemanly" or mentioned that he lacks a sense of nobility behind his back he DID have his own principles, and those didn't include forcing natives into indentured labour. Flexing his old contacts he managed to get himself a small skyship crewed by couple able sailors only to promptly disappear into the Ocean of Clouds.

Physical Description:

Stephan is roughly 189cm tall, with wide shoulders and a posture of a man used to his own authority. His clothing are bulky and often worn until they are in need of active repairs. The man is often seen with his pipe, produced from the depths of the internal pockets. Whatever weapons he has are usually located on the left hip with a sizeable pouch for supplies (consumables, ammo, minor items) on his right.
Stephan is usually dressed in dark-blue, slightly antique-looking officers garb with overcoat extending all the way down to his knees. The cloth is tough and combined with the fact that the uniform is multiple-layered it offers nice protection against the raging winds that blow sky-high. Something that offered a challenge to tailors back in the Empire is his left arm. And most of the torso really. The metallic protrusions, and in some places sheer plating with valves and dials, cover most of the body of the Captain and his left arm is completely a steam-driven feat of engineering. Due to this all the clothing usually lacks left sleeve and has some convenient holes for the steam to vent out.
Parts that are not artificial are usually a mess of scar tissue and old wounds.
Left eye is something of an oddity even backed with the rest of Stephans body. The contraption consists out hardy outer layer and clockwork so intricate most of it can't be seen by a naked eye within. The mechanics of the eye are shoddy at best and some things can only be seen as a blur of steamy shadows at times, yet at others it allows him to see with incredible clarity. The steamworks here are so delicate they are disrupted even by his own emotional state. That is a boon to anyone nearby really. When the Captain starts to lose his temper and his internal pressure rises (both blood and otherwise) the insides of the eye will start overheating, usually angering him even more, until they glow in a faint red and the monocle-like lenses pop out with a hissings vent of steam.

Starting Moves:
Heavy Boarding Sabre (300 OM): Heavier variety of a standard curved sword, designed for ship-to-ship boarding actions and crowded combat. It is slightly shorter than your average blade, which makes it easy to use in places (like the engine room) where a longer one would be a burden. Despite that, it is almost half as heavier, something only appreciated by the strongest fighters out there. Before arriving to the Omniverse Captain had some trouble with blades. They used to break every single time he tried to use them with his left arm. Here this problem disappeared. The sabre is just as tough as he is. The round handle-guard offers moderate protection to the arm of the wielder and while the sword is slightly disbalanced it is usually dismissed by the Captain as his strength is enough to just ignore the minor inconvenience. The Captain generally fights with broad, slashing motions, almost as if he was using an axe instead of a sabre, he rarely resorts to more complicated techniques, most of the times when opponents defences and/or armour are strong enough to withstand the normal strikes. He may then resort to aiming his swings or even, Queen Forbid, actually performing a piercing blow.
Note: The Sabre is roughly 65-70 cm long.

RP-Fodder Powers:
Clouds of Steam: When exceptionally angry or actively exerting himself Stephans prostheses start venting excess amount of steam worked up by that. This only increases as he takes damage.
The Hat: You can not make him remove the hat. We are not responsible for anything that happens to you if you do. Same goes for pipe.
Steamy Eyesight: Unless he is capable of using both his eyes Stephan may not always be able to perceive colours with his left eye.

I confirm that I have read and agreed to the Rules of Conduct.

I was sent here by Okor ( viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2315 ). He asked me to put this in the end of the form.
