Operation Desert Storm <Void Quest — Gate in the Dunes>
#21
I look up. Shura! Surely he’s taken care of those secondaries!

He’s …

Beaten, bruised and burned. They’ve muzzled his bird. She struggles, but her wings are held tight.

God dammit …!

Carmine draws something from the side of her armor. A small, green circle.

No. I struggle to find my feet. I have to run.

“Even despite your transgressions, Enel, you are still human. I would not do this unless I had to. But you cannot be allowed to do as you wish any longer.”

“I happen to agree.”

That voice …?

Carmine looks up from me. I roll over, looking up. It’s …

Roland!

His pistols are raised at Carmine. Two deputies stand at either side of him, their stances identical, each wearing long coats.

He speaks: “But, Carmine of the Frigid Flame, neither can you. You walked into my town, burned down an establishment, killed civilians.”

Carmine adjusts herself uncomfortably, but stands up straight to look Roland in the eye. “They harboured this … monster. Do you know what he did? He burned down a library in Carrefore. Killed everybody inside.”

Roland nods. “And that is terrible. But this is not an Empire town. And you are not a deputy of mine.”

I can feel the heat coming off of Carmine. “Do you intend to save this man?!”

Roland moved only his mouth. “I intend to keep the peace in my town. No more. No less. Now … are you going to come quietly? Or are you going to make more trouble?”

Carmine is still for a moment. Then her hand lights up with blue flame.

The air lights up with gunfire. I can’t see any of it. My limbs still feel completely numb. I keep my head down.

It’s fast. No sooner can I think of trying to crawl away, before the gunfire abruptly stops. I look up.

Several of the paladins are lying on the ground, wounded. Shura and his bird stand, stunned, in the midst of it, as Roland thunders towards the prone figure of Carmine. He cuffs her, then looks over to Shura.

“I take it you’re with this guy?” He jerks his head over to me, and I finally remember to feel pissed off at his insolence. ‘This guy’.

“It’s God Enel,” I spit from the ground.

He ignores me.

Shura nods. “Yes, I … thank you, Mister Deschain.”

I grumble.
