Unless an admin overrules me, I think that is acceptable. You asked for permission, the characters in question are from the same source material and it makes sense for an important figure such as John Connor to have a bodyguard.

That said, as it is mentioned in the rules, the caveat that anyone can end up joining as either of these characters applies. In case someone opts to do so, you will have to talk with them and decide whether to hand the NPC over to them or make your own NPC an alternate history version. Furthermore, unless you make the character an Assist, they cannot aid you in combat.
